Tri-coat paint?

  • Tri-coat paint?

    OK, i know single stage [paint,no clear on top] 2-stage bc-cc.Is tri-coat like a candy,base[silver, gold]color, candy red lets say,then clear,what else could be called tri-coat,been wondering for awhile, any thoughts on this, thanks mavrick

    A tri-coat is, well, three coats.

    Yes, candies are good examples of tri-coat. I'd guess that pearls are probably the most common tri-coat these days, color basecoat/transparent pearl midcoat/clear topcoat.

      as far as i know, a tri coat paint is any paint that has a base coat, a flake coat, and a clear coat. however, Metallic paints can't be considered as tri coats (i think) since the flakes and the paint are mixed. tri coats have a dedicated flake coat.

      well :P that's what the guy who repainted my hood told me when I asked him that question

      BTW, if you have a tri coat, be careful not to burn it. repainting those is pretty expensive.

          You are correct. Most metallic paints are just BC/CC. The metal flakes are in the BC. Even some pearls are just BC/CC. You just mix the pearls in the CC.

          You are also correct that its VERY expensive to repaint candies. Not to mention hard to match colors exactly also.
