  • Some thoughts on swirls/washing techniques

Last time I waxed my truck was early April and now its in desperate need of a good detail. Work, work and more work prevent details on my vehicle in the summer, then when I have time to do my truck I am doing someone else's car on the side.

Now.... Washing my truck last weekend I noticed light swirls (not to severe) in the bright sunlight, really is to be expected on black. I did notice they are in one direction, the direction I tend to wash and dry my vehicle. Seems no matter how hard you try to prevent fine swirls and scratches they still seem to appear. I use all the proper methods, two buckets, lambs wool wash mitt quality drying towels and so on. Its almost disappointing! If I could just find a little time to take care of my truck, seems the next couple weekends are booked up by one thing or another.

    Perhaps dont wash your car?

Maybe your pressing down too hard when washing and drying? are you going over the same section when washing? I wish i could help you more but it seems like your doing the right things. Not that it should matter but how old is your mitt? I buy a new one every yr for good measure.

I've got the exact same problem as well, the scrathes are not swirls, but lines in the direction I wash that panel everytime.

i used the 2 bucket method for the first time today, and it was amazing how much junk comes off of the mit when you wash the car.

Since you already do this, maybe you need a new wash mit sponge, or whatever you prefer?

Do you use the Grit Guards in your bucket. I have one in each bucket, the washing solution and clean water bucket. I expect little swirls on my car since it's outside all the time and I keep it covered. Removing the cover over time puts small scratches in it. But I would rather put up with that than the bird poo and other **** falling on my paint.

i have this happen too, but there not hard to remove, most of the time it comes out with M09 on a 9006. i wonder if using my pressure washer would change anything.

I don't think they will be a big problem either. From time to time I will use my pressure washer to remove the sand/grit prior to a hand wash but not every time. Seems to me it would be easier on the surface with all the water 'floating' the grime away.
