Ok, so what makes one buffer better than another? I have a $14.99 Pep Boys special, and it did a pretty good job on my mom's car with some Swirl Remover 2.0.
How does a top-end buffer like a PC compare to the lower-end stuff? Different speed? More features?
Firstly, the PC is a random orbital polisher (not just an orbital) and has variable speeds which are necessary for the applications of cleaners, polishes, and wax/sealants. Secondly, the PC has the power. You need to place a fair amount of pressure on the buffer in which a regular buffer will just bog and stop. Finally, the pad selection available. You need to use different pads (polishing, finishing etc.) for different products.
There are pretty big differences between a regular orbital and a PC.
Yep, that helps a lot. My cheapy is also a random orbital, and you can hear the speed varying while it runs. Never tried pressing down on it too hard. If I ever do mom's Honda again, I might try, because there are a few more swirls that need some attention.
As far as pads go, mine came with an applicator and a buffing pad, but I always assumed you could order different pads. When I bought the buffer, I picked up some extra applicators so I wouldn't mix products.
