i was told claying a black car will cause marring, is that true?

    Re: clay bar and marring

A mild clay like the white clay in Meguiar’s kits won’t mar paint, black or otherwise.

There are different grades of clay with different levels of aggressiveness. Some more aggressive professional products might cause marring. They’re intended to be used before power buffing.

A product either is abrasive towards paint or it's not, the product doesn't have a preference for color, besides that 99.9% of all new cars have a clear coat finish over the top of the color base coat so you're never really working on colored or pigmented paint but instead are working or clear paint, or clear resin.

In the industry there are generally 3 grades of clay, fine, mild and aggressive. Used correctly, most fine and mild grades will not haze paint. The aggressive clay can and will, (depending on the paint and the technique of the user), but keep in mind that in most cases anyone using an aggressive clay bar is more than likely going to be machine cleaning the paint afterwards as part of a process and the least of their defect removal worries are going to be any leftover haze as their focus will likely be on more serious defect removal thus the reason they're working on the car in the first place. The claying for them is just the first step of the overall process. (Besides washing and surface evaluation).

I have been told by Rick at ADS that white (less aggressive) clay and blue (mild) clay are about the same in aggressiveness. I asked him that I needed a replacement clay bar since the one in my Smooth Surface Kit was getting wore down. He recommended the blue clay and I won't have any problems even though it does say "mild" on it's container. He told me to stay away from the red clay since it can cause scratching and some marring, but that is expected if you need to remove some heavy bonded contaminants.

I have black and no marring after claying with QC. Just ordered C2000 Mild Clay. To replace the clay I ran out of.

Perhaps who ever told you that wasnt using enough lubrication while claying. If you do not use enough QD sometimes claying can leave marks.
            Just a thought.
