Has anyone ever heard of the ming paint mirror glaze stuff? http://www.truckinamerica.com/ming.html Could it really work?

Yes, I've heard of Ming and bought a car that came with a Ming job back in the late 80's. After picking up the car from the dealer, we drove it down the street to the Ming shop and watched them work. They used a rotory with a wool pad and their products to polish & seal the surface. Their process was the real key from what I recall and that involved skilled work with a rotary which I can do myself. The tech who polished my car did a fantastic job, but I've seen Ming jobs with halograms and other defects. Simply put, the results will be as good as the tech using the rotary and associated products.

Ming used to be quite popular here in SoCal back in the 80's, but I haven't heard much about them for years. I remember reading and hearing about various law suits against them and I honestly thought they had gone out of business many years ago. The Ming job done to our car held up very well, but it definitely did not last 3 years. We took the car back a couple of times because of marring, halo scratches, etching, etc, from normal use and they polished it again, but only the places where they thought it was bad enough and they never did remove all the defects to bring the car's finish back to perfection. It was part of the deal when buying that car, but I feel I can get the same or better results with using the processes and products talked about in this and other detailing forums.

What product could they apply that would last 3 years, or even 1 year. It claims to strengthen the paint, is that possible?

If what it claims is true, it would be an amazing product.

One of my friends wants to get it done and im trying to convince him to just get it detailed regullarly again. But i cant argue with the 3 years. He is not a detailer, and not really having to wax his car for 3 years sounds like a dream come true.

you can always try it out. Get them to do a test secton on a panel from the junk yard.( Ask the technician to perform a free "test section" so you can see what the Ming process will do for your vehicle.) Then use Meguiar's on the other half and see what they did. you can also try leaving the panel outside and see how it holds up to the elements.

I've worked in the right places to know that it IS a scam. Ming is just product that is redone every couple of years despite it's bragging rights as being the only product requiring a single application.

Meguiar's can be called a once-a-year car polish by applying it once a year. That doesn't mean it looks good with deep and dark reflections for the entire year.

It's not so much a product as it really is a service. The product can range from rebadged Car Brite or even 3M compounds and sealants. It's the service that is sold and the way they sell it to customers is the business genius. It takes advantage of those who don't understand paint and paint care.

I remember my old manager trying to sell me on the product such that I will be able to sell the product to customers. I mentioned Meguiar's and he just flat out told me the Ming product is a scam, but it sells. I worked at that particular shop for two weeks. I couldn't stand seeing seniors being taken advantage of. But, that's another story
