  • How to detect swirls without sunlight?

    Hi

I was wondering if people here use certain types of light in order to check for swirls when there is no sunlight around.

It happend to me several times that the sun was blocked by a thick pack of clouds. I tried a TL lamp :

    and a normal 60W lamp :

The second one was the best but still not near the effect of what sunlight gives. Are their any other types of lamps that will make swirs better visable?

a good halogen lamp is about the best you can do, if you're not looking to spend a lot of money.

Do a search for the Swirl Finder.

This appears to be the favorite among many in regards to finding those nasty swirls.

I used a little magnum (is that what cop flashlights are called? it's one like that but smaller) the other day and it worked well enough to show my sister how bad her paint looked before ScratchX, and how good it looked after. I'm sure it doesn't work as well as the dual xenon or something like that, but it was pretty decent.

Brinkmann is just one of many companies that make xenon flashlights. Also check out brands like Streamlight or Surefire, who makes tactical grade flashlights of top quality. Wolf-Eyes is another similar brand although cheaper, since it is produced in China.

I think the Magnum is only used by Dirty Harry

And it can be dangerous mistaking your Magnum for your Maglite...

                Sorry, couldn't help it

You got me there. I posted that last night at work (oops did I do that? who me, on the forums while at work? never!), so I was pretty tired. I knew it didn't sound right but I couldn't think of the right word.

I think they all are, try a search on google for xenon + the dutch word for flashlight, thats how I found some suppliers in my country.

Think I found one for you: knivesandtools.com which is in The Netherlands.

WHOA! I think it'll be tough to see the swirls while the paint is melting with this thing.
