  • What would happen? (Clay & Lubricant)

I've only clayed once, my mother's 1994 white Grand Am. Used 'Mother's' brand clay (Meg's not available at stores around here).

I was pleased with results (but since it had never been clayed, maybe anything would have been an improvement!)......but I used soooo much of their lubricant spray (90% of the bottle, I'd guess) out of fear of not having enough of it on the car and doing some kind of damage. Well, I used so much that it was impossible for me to simply 'wipe dry' as I worked....unless I wanted to go through about 20 towels. So I gave up trying to wipe it all off, and just rewashed it afterwards.

NOW......I have some Meg's Quik Clay and want to do my 2006 G6 (red). *If* I used less QD this time around (in order to wipe dry this time and not rewash), but accidently don't use enough, what is the WORSE thing that could happen to paint/clearcoat? If the clay starts to drag on a spot without enough QD, it won't cause marring or scratch because it's nonabrasive, right? Or am I wrong? If I'm overly concerned, maybe I should just use the whole bottle of QD and rewash, huh?

I use NXT carwash (diluted of course) instead of a QD when claying. Try it...

I have found the clay will stick/smear on the surface of the paint if there is not enough lubrication, this is easily removed with a paint cleaner or pass of properly lubricated clay.... If it were me I would use a QD'er to clay then re wash if needed, I have found that the clay seems to fall apart when used with car wash soap and water. It usually takes about 14oz of QD'er to do my entire truck.

I have never had any marring from lack of lubrication but someone might chime in and have more experience with that.

AMF...thanks for the tip, but I'm gonna stick with the QD that came in the box with the clay. I love the stuff anyway (use it on a regular basis already).

So....the clay will stick/smear if not enough lube, but can be romved easily enough. Great! But just to clarify.......even though it comes off easily, you have no marks on the paint/clearcoat where it happened, right?

Ooops, I didn't see that last line in your post, sorry!
