  • clouded paint

I put a car bra on my car to protect it when i was driving cross country and when i took it off i had some spots where the paint was clouded up on the hood. I was wondering how i can get rid of that if i can... like what products to use and what exactly to do. any help would be really appreciated. thanks.

    Re: clouded paint

Same exact thing happened to me....I was horrifed!!

It was sugessted that I use ScratchX, didn't work of course because that's not what the product is for.

Other suggestions (BTW, this is moisture that "baked in" under the bra) were to use diluted alcohol to remove any wax and let the area dry out (didn't work)....Or use paint cleaner (Deep Crystal 1, very inexpensive and good stuff) and then a hair dryer (also didn't work). The car also sat out in the 90 degree heat for a week during all this (after the wax was removed) and that didn't help either. Another person on this board said the hair dryer trick worked for them just fine, so try that first!!

Ended up having to go to body shop where they used a "hot gun" on it (I told them I already removed any wax from area so they wouldn't use God-knows-what on it first). They said if that didn't work, my other option was to use a rubbing compound on areas. Fortunately, the "hot gun" worked beautifully. Must be alot hotter than my hairdryer!!!

This clouded paint you refer to is marring of the paint?

i'm not sure what marring means... i have a black car and there are clouded spots where the paint has turned grey on the front.

          Marring = small scratches

I'm thinking that the underside of your car bra was not soft enough for your paint and rubbed the finish continously over your trip causing the cloudiness which may be small scratches.

Similar to this cloudiness below but these are noticable scratches.

When you examine them real close, do they look like small scratches?

            Re: clouded paint

In this case the clouding was moisture that had been absorbed into the paint.

The high heat that was applied allowed the trapped water to diffuse out of the paint and evaporate.

Another problem I've seen is that some cars come in and not only has the moisture been absorbed into the paint, but in some spots you could tell dirt and leaves, etc got under it and actually wore the paint away!

Oh yeah, way, way, way hotter. I've used them to sweat solder onto copper piping. Also knew guys who always used 'em to light cigs.

If you're not careful with them they'll peel the paint right off the metal. You need to keep it a reasonable distance off the paint and keep it moving. An IR surface thermometer is a good idea.

zerohero, have you had a chance to inspect it closely? Does it look like millions of tiny scratches or does it look smooth and glossy with discoloration?

I had a similar detail. He kept his car under a cover for a long time. Bad thing was is that he would cover the car while engine was still warm. It ended up with a discoloration that was deep into the paint. Is this what you mean by "clouded paint"?

Was able to remove 70% with wet sanding and compounding. Is there a better way? Here is the result but still had some of the white stains.
