  • color x made paint worse

hey i'm new to the boards,

I recently used color x in combination with a clay bar using the correct steps

I have a 1994 mazda - paint is faded, in some places cracked/oxidized but looks great from 10 feet away, i was hoping to restore the paint using the steps from the bronco makeover

anyway, all said in done, i ended up with little white cracks everywhere on the paint, looks like orangepeeling - did something happen to my clearcoat? is there anyway to fix this?
    thanks

You put on too much. Use a little Color X and rub it in until it almost disappeareds . Move on to the next section , and then wipe off the 1st section. Never do it in the sun or on a hot surface. For wipe off use cotten towels or microfiber towels , do not use old shirts for wipe off.

      First off, Welcomed to MOL!

It's difficult to help without more info. If your paint is faded and oxidized, then Color-X is your "All-In-One" prodcut. It cleans, polishes and waxes, which saves you a load of time.

That being said, you're working with 12 year old paint, and you mention the paint is cracked. Please post pictures. I would suspect clear-coat failure, as cracked paint is not normal of a correctable flaw.

As Larry mentioned, make sure your following the directions exactly. Trust me, by forgetting, or leaving out a step can drastically affect the final result. I also see your searching the forums for info, which is awesome! Try to take a picture, its much easier for us to diagnose the problem if you supply us with a view of the surface.

      Again.. Welcome to MOL!

If there are actual cracks in your paint, then no wax/polish from any company can fix that. Sounds like you just filled up the cracks with the colorx.

        Pictures would definately help!

          wow,

thanks for all the quick responses.

it could have been that i used too much color x, it seemed to just dry up and get sucked into the paint while i was doing it with a terry cloth. i only used about a 1/4 of a bottle. The car was in the shade in a car port when i was doing it.

I will take pictures soon and post them,

          thanks again.

I find that when working products with terry towels they tend to "eat" a bit of product when starting with a fresh piece. They are very absorbent. I haven't really found a good balance of amount of product to use, when to change to a clean piece of towel, and how many times to fold it over. For me it is easier to use the hi-tech applicator, but it will take more passes since those are less aggressive than terry.

Looks like you ended up filling in the holes/cracks with the wax..honestly i am not sure what you can do without getting a entirely new paintjob

                    Hey,

I am sorry to say it, but those cracks are the beginning of clear coat failure. The wax simply filled the cracks. Nothing short of a paint job will repair this.

Agreed. ColorX was definately not the cause of this. This is clearcoat failure and only a repaint will be able to fix your problem.

                        well that *****
guess i'll have to get a new paintjob
i had no idea my car had cracks in the paint
                        the paint looked decent before
luckily the cracking only occured on the hood so it's not too bad
                        thanks for all the replies
