  • Cooked my car, literally.

    Hello all,

Today was a nice day in sunny California. In fact it was a beautiful day to wash the ol' black beauty.

Took her out parked her in the shade, lathered her up, dried off, clay barred (first time in about 7 months), washed again, applied paint cleaner, applied polish, cooked car.

Yes thats right last step was cooked car. Turns out the sunny day I mentioned earlier means a very HOT day. Sure enough, even though I had applied polish in the shade, it was still hot enough to cook the oils in the polish and now I have nice beautiful streaks all over my hood.

Funny thing, I usually go with a Showroom #7, but ran out today so I picked up some Deep Crystal Polish from a local store. At first I was skeptical because I have never had any problems with Meguiars products. Ever. In fact I reccomend it to just about anyone I can. Even turned a few Zaino lovers around.

For this reason I went back to the store I bought it from and demanded a different bottle, applied some of the new polish on another section, in the shade. Let it sit for 20 min as before. Sure enough same results.

Its so frustrating when things like this happen. Can anyone recommend some steps for removing the polish from my hood? I've used NXT soap to get most of it off, but when I look closesly I can still se swirl marks that were made by the polish. And I am 100% sure it was the polish becuase its the same pattern as the white residue that was removed.

*Sigh. This has ruined my day.

So, exactly how hot was the surface of your black car when you applied the product?

I wouldn't recommend polishing your stove while it's on, either.

What the car in the sun prior to you parking it in the shade? If so, for how long? I always let my vehicles cool down to ambient temperature before washing, polishing or waxing.

I've applied Meguiar's products in the shade in southern California in temperatures exceeding 95 degrees. On those occassions, the car had been sitting in the garage from the previous day or I let it cool off in the shade (with the hood opened) for A FEW HOURS until my infrared thermometor showed surface temps = ambient temp.

DC#2 Polish should not be allowed to dry......that is probably what caused the problem. Especially on a hot day.
        Black......the ONLY color!

Sorry, did you say you let the polish sit for 20 minutes?

Or did you mean that you polished (applied and then wiped with micro-fiber), and then came back after 20 minutes and the streaks appeared?

As Mike has said before, Meguiar's polishes need only to be worked, then wiped. No drying needed.

rofl, polish is polish on wipe off....if you left in on for 20 mins its your fault for not reading the directions.....and not the poducts.

While everyone else is focusing on why things might have turned ugly for you, let me try to address your more immediate need of removing the streaks you now have.

Like removes like, so another application of DC2 should do it for you. If you're uncomfortable with another application of DC2 then go over the car again with your paint cleaner, then apply a coat of NXT or other wax/sealant of choice and you should have a great looking finish.

Good point MIO. I forgot that we should be helping him get the streaks out of there, not just trying to understand what happened.

And your advice is spot on, as usual.

If we don't find out HOW it happened, fixing the problem will be a very temporary solution.

Thanks alot for the replies. Also Mike, I will try going over with my paint clearner and then applying some #7 I picked up today, hopefully that'll do the trick.

To adress the idea that I had messed up here I shall clarify: it was the product.

Must have been a bad shipment or something.

Anyway, I applied in the shade on a fairly hot day, but not hotter than what I usually perform under.

I had applied the polish and removed with MF towels. After doing half of the hood it was getting a little too warm in my garage so I took about a 20 min break. Came back and sure enough theses beautiful grease-like streaks on the half of my hood I polished. I deducted that it couldn't have been my paint cleaner (the same bottle I've been using for the last 3 months) and the only other prodcut that was on the hood was the polish, which does contain oils and which looks very similar to the streaks that I have.

Again tried a different bottle of DC#2 on a quarter of the hood, wiped off, let it sit for 20 min and same results.

My procedure for cleaning and polishing have remained the same for as long as I have bought Meg products, the only difference is I went with, what I imagine to be, a cheaper and inferior DC#2.

I really don't know what happened, but I'm sure its a fluke. I would really like to get rid of the streaks though.

                    I appreciate the advice.

Please don't misunderstand me STG - I'm not ragging on you guys for trying to figure out the "how it happened" part. I just figured that you guys were covering that aspect so I decided to address perhaps Legacy51's more immediate concern - eliminating the streaking.
