  • M80: How often is too often?

    Hello everyone!

This may seem like a silly question to some, but how often is too often when using M80? I have an '05 Mustang GT and recently used the G100 for the first time. I didn't get all of the swirl marks out, but I got most of them. The reason I ask is after my last road trip of the year in October, I'd like to get rid of the remaining swirl marks, paint chips, etc. Should I wait a bit longer before using M80 again or is two months in between applications okay?

    Jon

#80 is a product you could use monthly for years, so no worries there.

Phew! Thats good to hear. I was a bit disappointed in my performance when using the G100 for the first time a couple weeks ago and am eager to get back at it. After that last road trip, "Thor" will receive another full detail.

      Cheers,
      Jon

Since you didn't get all the swirl marks out the first time, that means you haven't removed much paint. Going at it again now will be just the same as if you had been polishing longer the first time. So don't worry.

#80 or any other product Meguiar's has in their lineup won't remove paint chips.

I still have some swirls to remove on my car and hopefully I can get to them this weekend.

Remove chips? Of course not Murr, I know M80 won't remove chips.

I'd suggest finding ways to NOT have to use #80 monthly. Just a thought...

Hmmm. Murr said that it was okay to use 80 monthly, not that I would mind you. So, which is it, ok or not ok to use 80 two months since the last time I used it? The reason I ask is that I wanted to give the car a thorough detail after the last road trip of the year.

It really depends how much you wash your vehicle too. Do you wash it once, twice or three times a week? Your going to scratch the paint little by little as time goes on and the wax/polish is going to wear off your car as you wash. Since #80 is a light cutting cleaner/polish, I don't see any problem using it twice or maybe three times a month. It really depends if you want a swirl free paint job all the time.

I just disagree with Murr, I don't think it is a good idea to use #80 on a MONTHLY basis, especially if the car has a factory paint job.

If your just cleaning up some marring after a road trip, that's different, and I see no problem with using some #80.

Its the idea that #80 can be "safely" used monthly on a vehicle that gets me suspicious.

I'd concentrate more on keeping your LSP fresh, applying it more often, and using methods to ensure that you minimize marring.

Also, there will always be some degree of cobwebbing that your going to have to live with, its damn near impossible to keep Daily Drivers totally swirl/cobweb free.

                        JMHO, YMMV, take it FTW....

I could not agree more. I've been living with this on my black car for years.

I think two things are discussed here. One is if you can use #80 monthly without damaging the paint. With the PC I think you could do this for a long time (couple of years?), without damaging the paint. But I agree that if you found it necessary to polish every month, something in your methods needed to change. But this discussion isn't too relevant for your question...

Which is the other part: If it's OK to use #80 two months after using it the last time. And still, since you didn't remove the swirls the first time, it is perfectly fine to try again two months later

You can always think about how much paint a certain process is likely to remove. So, since you didn't remove the swirls the first time, that also means you didn't remove any measurable amount of paint. You need to remove paint, to remove swirls. And even though it's a very small amount of paint, this is why you wouldn't want to be using an abrasive polish every month.

Here's a nice thread by Mike Phillips on the subject, in case you've missed it:
