When using the 5 step detailing process on a car with no defects (swirls or scratches) on its clear coat, will there ever be a time when scratches are introduced to the finish, causing it to look bad? Barring cases not caused by lack of detailing attention (ie using the same MF on the tires and the hood.)

Anything that touches your paint could possibly scratch your car. They are pretty much inevitable. All you can do is be as careful as possible and remove scratches when they do appear.
By using clean high quality applicators, towels and other detailing tools along with the proper technique, you can greatly reduce the changes of instilling scratches and swirls into your clear coat.Patrick Yu

Hey,
I have to agree with Sneek. Anything that touches your paint has the potential to scratch or leaving marring. However if one is very diligent with the washing and drying process and you do everything you can to make sure nothing touches your paint between washes, you can minimize the marring substantially!
