  • #82 by hand

It is possible to apply #82 by hand and get good results or does it need to be applied by machine?

I tried using ScratchX, but it did not remove the fine scratches. Not sure if I worked it enough or used enough of the product. I followed ScratchX with Deep Crystal Paint Polish and then NXT.

So, I thought I would try the following, all by hand:

    #82
    #81
    NXT

The paint is in very good condition except for very light scratches and swirls. Thanks for any advice.

I'd try #9. It says right on the bottle that it is designed for hand application as well as machine application. That's what I used to use before I had a pc. Removing swirls on an entire car by hand is a heck of a lot of work.

      Hi Jim,

Your best bet for removing fine scratches from a clear coat is to use the ScratchX by hand. I try to demonstrate this each Saturday so that people can see how to apply it. It require you add some elbow grease in order to remove small particles of clear paint surrounding the scratches in an effort to remove the scratches.

Also, as I demonstrated this last Saturday at the Mach 1 clinic, it may require 2 to 3 applications depending on how hard your paint is and how deep the scratches are. This is because as you work the ScratchX into the finish, the microscopic diminishing abrasives breakdown. First they do their work, then they break down and polish out. You may not notice the difference until the 2nd, or third application.

I did 4 test spots over on a clear coated black Mach 1. With exception to some really deep straight-line scratches, I was able to remove the majority of the scratches by hand using ScratchX.

It was a powerful demonstration showing the importance of technique and in this case, 3 applications.

Most clear coat finishes are hard, especially if it is the factory baked-on paint. If ScratchX does not remove the defect by hand, then your next best option is to switch to a machine applied products.
