  • Makita B06040 Polisher

Does anyone have exerience with the Makita B06040 Sander/Polisher? Available from CMA. http://www.properautocare.com/matwomopo.html

It's a bit pricey ($300), but it might just be "The Machine" for a hobbiest detailer. It allows you to put a little extra umph into removing defects. It certainly would not be the machine for a pro detailer who already has a rotary polisher.

    Features of the B06040 include:
2-mode switch for "random orbit" action (finish sanding) and "random orbit with forced rotation" action (aggressive sanding and polishing).
Superior engineering and design reduces vibration by 20% and noise levels almost 2 to 1 over the competition.
Variable speed control dial (1,600 - 5,800 OPM; 180 - 670 RPM) for various applications.
Compact tool height (5-3/16") increases efficiency and maneuverability.

Will the 180-670 RPM for the "random orbit with forced rotation" action get the job done for those times that a rotary polisher might be the machine of choice?

      Hold on to your wallets...

I tried it out on a 1956 Ford F-150 recently, single-stage black paint and after my initial impressions were not good.

First there are some things to address, like the stock backing plate is too big.

Second, it's a lot bigger and heavier than the PC, while this can be overlooked if it outperforms the PC, if it doesn't then it's just a drawback.

The rotary function tended to cause the rotary to walk around on the paint.

      More to come...

Very interesting piece of equipment. I'd be exceedingly interested in hearing from some folks who have twirled this item around...

sorry to bump a old tread...

but I bought the makita 2 months ago....

From a old Waxcoa / Sears orbital 15+ years it still works, I wanted to make the next step.

Just trying different compound and pads

I picked it up for $240... yes BIG difference from the old orbital... I'm really happy

My cousin bought this polisher before he talked to me about it. I used it a couple of times and it doesn't seem to do what they claim. Like Mike said, it does seem to "walk" on the paint, and I didn't find that it had an aggressive enough orbit to remove defects, and with the top speed of the RPM 670, it didn't spin fast enough to break down the product at an effective speed. I'll stick to a normal rotary and follow up with the PC.
