  • Simoniz RO

    Hello all!

I have a Simoniz 10" Random Orbit buffer and had a little trouble sourcing GOOD buffing pads/bonnets until I received my 06 Meguiar's catalog. Anyhow, I found microfiber bonnets (X4009), foam finishing bonnet (X4008), and the lambs wool bonnet (X4010).

From the catalog after "task:" it appears that the microfiber and lambs wool are the only bonnets for applying polish and wax. However, I prefer, from experience) to use the foam bonnet and if more cutting power is needed-substitute the lambs wool bonnet. Is this recommended? Anyone have experience with these products and this buffer?

I will be removing ten years of light scratches which has made the paint dull and hazy in the sunlight. The paint has been Gold Classed regularly and 3-stepped when time permits. I'm really just getting a feeler before I make my order which includes:
    X4010
X4008 x2 (If I can APPLY with these bonnets)
    X4009 x3
    #82 M8232 Swirl Free Polish
    #80 M8032 Speed Glaze

I hope that all of this stuff is available through Meguiar's Canada as well, I will be pleading with Greg if that is not the case.

Alright guys, tell me what you think.

    THANK YOUUUUUUU MEGUIAR'S!!!

Haven't tried theese bonnets myself, but since they state that the 4008 is made from the finishing foam, it probably isn't aggressive enough to actually remove defects.

Another problem is that the big surface area on these types of buffers make it difficult to actually remove defects. This is because the pressure you apply is distributed over such a large area. And you can't just simply apply more pressure, since that would make the pad stop spinning. These kind of buffers aren't very powerful, often only 100-150 watt.

All in all, I don't think this buffer will be able to remove 10 years of light scratches...

The pads you consider buying would set you back at least $50. IMO it would be better in the long run, to offer a bit more now and get a PC, which can be had for around $130 online. This way you won't be spending money on a buffer that will not deliver the desired results.

Well that's excellent, I can't get any of the bonnets so that pretty much spoils my plans. I'm still not going to give up.

If anyone sees anything on ebay or is willing to buy the bonnets for me and then send them I'm game for that.

I must say however, that Tim at Meguiar's Inc. was FAR better to speak with the people at Meguiar's Canada (Dominion Church Seal).

Zet, I just read your reply. I guess I will cave for a PC. I was really hoping for a trial with the products that I haven't yet become accustomed to. Anyway, thx for the response.

It's possible that some paint problems cannot be fixed with any product or process, just to keep perspective. You can often time improve defects, but not always completely remove defects.

        What are you working on?

It is a 1997 Nissan Quest, Sunset Red. There was an incident with our basketball net and some wind so the insurance was called and the adjuster came in. He was amazed that a nine year old (this was last year) vehicle had only 3% fade where red is known to fade 5% per year.

Anyway, I believe that some pictures are required eh Mike? I always tell my customers that I can make most defects less noticeable, but not necessarily remove them. So I am aware of my limits.

The vehicle does not have a neglected finish so I'm almost 100% certain that the G100 and some M80/M82 will for sure remove the fine scratches. I'll even use some M2 if need be.

PS, after a 3-step the fine scratches are barely if at all noticeable. They are only noticeable after some rain and a wash. From what I know, this is because: 1) The defect was not removed, the polish 'covered' up the defects and, 2) The oils from the polish have worn off, regardless if the protection of wax is still there.
