    Hey wassup? I'm cody I'm 18, I'm from alabama, I own a 93 Ford Ranger XLT with a 3 month old paint job...I'm having some issues with the clear coat, aka the dreaded orange peel....Here is a close up of it 1st off...



    and heres the truck as of August 2006

    I really need help I want this to be a show truck and I love this truck....I detail it every friday and wax every month






    heres the 1st day I got it..it use to look really sharp with no orange peel

    The only effective way to properly remove orange peel is to wet-sand the paint and then remove your sanding marks using a rotary buffer.

    If you don't know how to use a rotary buffer and if you have never wet-sanded a paint job before, then you certainly don't want to learn either of these crafts on something that is important to you.

    The other option is to pay someone that does know how to use a rotary buffer and wet-sand to do it for you but then you run the risk of mediocre results because both of these procedures are a lot of work and require a high degree of skill, knowledge and experience to do it right the first time and not leave the paint filled with Tracers and Swirls let along burn-throughs on high points and edges.

    Also, the time to have sanded and buffed the paint was a day or two after it came out of the paint booth, not 3-months down the road.


    We're sorry to have to share the downsides of removing orange peel, but it is the honest apprasial of where you're currently at if you don't know how to use the rotary buffer or wet-sand.

      I don't really understand alot about this "orange peel" syndrome.....but can it happen on a new 2006 vehicle with a factory paint job??

      My last detail i noticed the paint was getting "bumpy" around the wheel wells. It wasn't bumpy on top of the paint like contamination type, it looks like the actual paint itself is bubbling!!?? Is this something new vehicle owners are expected to just tolerate, and what (if anything) will eventually happen over time to these areas?

        I've noticed that domestic vehicles have alot more orange peel that imports...I saw a Chevy Avalance that had worse orange peel than mine, made me feel beter about mine

        -and I think I'll be going to a detailing shop today and gettijng a quote, all they do is detail

          The orange peel on your new paint job isn't bad at all. That is similar to what you would see on a new car. Think of orange peel as standard equipment.

          Also, the orange peel may be in the base coat, not the clear coat. In that case the only real fix is a total repaint. Then the new paint job may again have........orange peel. And on and on and on.......

          Maybe you should have complained right away about the orange peel. Like Mike said it would have been better to attempt the correction right away.

          I wonder what the painter would have said if you complained about it right away. Would he have said "that's the best I can do!", "that's normal" or would he have offered to reshoot it.

          I'm not trying to discourage you. I shudder when I contemplate having to have a body panel repainted. I have been less than impressed with 99% of the repaints I've seen.

          I'm sure there are many painters out there that can do the job without the orange peel, but they will want some big bucks for their work.

          If that were my truck, I would probably live with the orange peel. Having someone try to fix it without the necessary skills could make it much worse and make a reshoot mandatory. Like I said the orange peel isn't bad and the paint overall looks pretty good.

            I'd simply enjoy it

            You stated that you want this to be a show truck. What will your daily driver be? No offense, but when I was 18, I was lucky enough to be able to afford one car let alone two. If the truck will be your daily driver, then you are setting yourself up for a lot of heartache and anxiety. Why? Well, daily drivers get dings, nicks, rock chips, etc. When you get one, it could be devasting to a show vehicle. If I were you, I'd just enjoy having as clean a vehicle as I can mantain.

                Orange peel is not something that happens to a paint job, it's either in the paint from the beginning, or it isn't. Simply put it just means that the layer of paint is uneven, as in "not perfectly flat". It often has the appearance of a bumpy texture, a bit like the surface of an orange, thus the name. So, it's not something that will evolve over time.

                And yes, it is seen on many new vehicles. Many owners apparently just accepts it (as they do buy the car with orange peel ), but if more people started complaining and mentioning it to car dealers and paint shops, maybe the quality of paint jobs would start to increase

                  I don't recall ever having a car without orange peel! I just thought it was standard equipment. Never owned a Benz or Bimmer though. Maybe some day.............

                  The life of a daily driver is a rough one. The stone chips and swirls still upset me though. But we do the best that we can, and it's still pretty good. Just think what our daily drivers would look like if we weren't OCD!

                    yea I just want it looking nice as possible...I actually saw a nice beamer parked so I decided i'd take a close look at the paint, it had the same stuff but in certain areas like bumper it had orange peel...are there some waxes that make the clear look sharper??? or is it b/c I haven't waxed my truck since I got it painted? lol all I got to do was clay bar, that was about 2 weeks ago, I been to busy and its been crazy weather here, I just bought some NXT WAX :-D so I'll be taking pics when I wax it...I think I'm jkust gonna live with it, it has been painted before, like a year ago, but the clear coat was defective so I got alot better job this time I've been happy so far, until I saw some vehicles on here...then I was blown away by their like glass reflections
