  • Restoring Chrome Trim

Will NXT All Metal Polish work on this trim. I think it's chrome but not 100% sure. It's on a '91 735i. If it does work, what is the best way to apply it to the area. If it doesn't work, what will?

    Are you sure that's chrome?

It looks more like some type of aluminum, possibly anodized aluminum. If it's anodized aluminum then there's nothing practical you can do to fix it.

If it's chrome or uncoated aluminum then it's highly likely that our NXT Metal Polysh will remove the oxidation or staining and restore brilliance and clarity. To do this simply apply and work in and against the metal our NXT Metal Polysh using a microfiber applicator like our Even Coat Applicator or a peice of terry cloth towel. Wipe off the excess and repeat if necessary.

How can I tell what it is exactly? Here is a picture of the whole car if it helps..... I just assumed it was Chrome because that's what I thought they used, I really didn't have any basis for it. So it's probably aluminum. Oh well. So how do I prevent stuff like that happening to aluminum?

I had the same thing on my 2000 mod 523i ,and NXT All Metal Polish did a great job there.

Just try it,it cant get wourse than it is,or?
Detailing cars is a form of art. Most appreciate it, few possess the required skill and even fewer understand it.

You can rub some metal polish onto the trim and if you see a lot of gray and/or black residue showing up on your applicator cloth and the place you're rubbing starts looking better, as in back to a mirror finish, then this is a pretty good sign it's uncoated aluminum.

If after rubbing your restore a mirror finish but you don't see a lot of black/gray residue on your cloth this would be sign you had dirty/stained chrome.

If after rubbing some metal polish on the trim and you don't see a lot of gray/black residue and little or no change in the trim, this would be sign of anodized aluminum.

Invest in a jar of NXT Metal Polysh and give it a try, if you're lucky it will be aluminum and polish right up. You could also check on some BMW forums as I'm sure this issue will be a known issue and some BMW enthusiasts has already been there and done that when it comes to this car model, year and trim problem.
