Years ago it seemed to me that the more you waxed your car , the more you had too. Maybe waxes are different now.

Setec Astronomy hit it head on. You can't wax too much. When you wax, you’re only putting on a layer (if you want to call it that) that’s at most, a couple molecules thick. So, its not really a "protect-all never go away" thing.
The only way to completely remove a wax, other than time, would be to use a cleaner. If you use a polish before you wax, that has any cleaning ability, your removing the wax that’s there. Wax is no more that a chemical that prevents contaminates from bonding and marring the finish of your car.
So when you think your waxing too much, your really not. I wax once a month, and while it might not be helping too much, you’re not hurting anything. Wax will wear away with time.
It would be interesting if we get a chemist's opinion, but from what Mike said in a class that I attended, "like dissolves like", so I would guess that next time you're applying wax, you're also simultaneously dissolving the previously applied wax.
