  • Spotting

I have some what hard water at my house. Ive been trying to find the least aggressive product to take these H20 spots off my paint. Ive tried ScratchX and ColorX with great results(AS IN I BARELY PUSH ON THE APPLICATOR, LIKE I USE MY PINKY TO PUSH IT). BUT with one question can I use one or the other everytime I wash my truck to get rid of the spots?

I dont want to diminish my paint early seeing as its only a 2004. IF you guys have anything to add like trying a different product that would be awesome, I just dont want to be removing paint for only water spots.

oh and I really do mean I barely push on the applicator pad with colorX or scratchx on it adn it takes the spots off easily.

Are these hard water spots just little things that show up after you've washed and dried the car? If so, I find a quick shot of whatever detail I can reach the fastest takes care of it.

If you're talking about spots that show up when/if the sprinklers attack the car and they are a bit more stubborn, try washing the car with a solution of white vinegar and plain water. This has worked well for me on a few occassions....I just don't know for sure if the vinegar removes wax or not. Anyone? Bueller?

Do a search for a thread on water softeners. Someone wrote a big review on one a while back. Rockpick was it?

well I really dont want a water softner just so i can wash my cars, Im looking for a megs product that could remove the spotting easier than colorX and ScratchX thats is if there is one. One method that I use is clay the vehicle adn then go over it with cleaner wax and that usually does the trick...but it takes too long for my busy schedule, thats why I was "testing" scratchx adn colorx. I dont wanna buy a water softner.. sorry to kind of kick the boot here... I was just wondering what megs least effective product was besides the cleaner wax/colorx/scratchx.

and to add I barely work in the colorx adn scratchx. what i mean is that I rub on the product like a wax, adn then i wait for it to dry or I try the finger test then I remove it. This removed the spotting for me, by using scratchx or colorx. The main thing here is that I dont want to be using a product that does a lot of damage to the paint when I only need something as simple as spots gone.

AS mike said use the least aggressive product for the job.

So can I keep using colorx adn scratchx like I do to remove the spots or should I stop and do the clay/cleanerwax, or should I find the least aggressive product that megs makes adn use that?

Note: I have a pretty busy schedule, so a one step product would be great.

So u just say use a quik detailer, cause These spots came from when I spot free rinsed my truck and dried, I guess it was stupid of me to wash my truck in such a degree of weather...cough 92 degrees cough.. yes Im retarded, but Ive tried this adn nothing really happened that were still therewhen the sun whould hit it directly. This afternoon Ill try a quick wax adn a quick detailer just to see what happends. Sorry if I seemed reallu rude in the above post....sorry its a long story dealing with my dog, hes alright now(hes not dead)

I've got pretty hard water as well and when the weather get warm (and especially humid) the spots are worse.....no matter how fast I try to dry things off. Quick Detailer (or the NXT version which tends to leave the surface a little slicker) and a micro fiber (or terry) towel does the trick and without disturbing the wax.

I didn't think you came off as rude at all, don't give it a second thought. Like I said, if the water spots are just little remnants left over from washing then a QD should do it for you as they are pretty "fresh" spots. If they've been sitting for long time then of course something more aggressive would probably be in order. The way you describe using ScratchX sounds to me like it's a pretty safe way to cure your problem. I say this because, if you're trying to remove swirls using ScratchX by hand it takes a LOT of work to accomplish. So gently wiping some on/off should be just fine. Having said that though, I would think a cleaner wax would work just as well.

Hope your dog continues to be well!

well I tried the cleaner wax, but it partially takes the spots off and leaves these little dots that really annoy the heck out of me, right now Im trying a second pass of the cleaner wax to see if the results improve. Yea hes alright, he just went exploring by himself adn I didnt know it, until I came home adn saw that he was gone. He came back though

So you would say it would be safe to use scratchx like Im using it when ever I get water spotting?

Should be safe enough, I just wouldn't wait to remove till it's dry.

When you get water spots after washing, I would start with the QD to see if it removes them, if not you could then step up to ColorX as this will also leave behind some wax, and thereby save you a step. Only if this doesn't work I would choose ScratchX, as you will have to reapply wax after this. This way you will start with the least aggressive product, which also requires the least amount of time
"Now Biff... make sure that we get two coats of wax this time..."

If you can get the water spots early enough, a good quick detailer may remove them. I was very impressed with NXT Speed Detailer in removing hard water spots from a sprinkler attack on my dad's Grand Prix GTP.

If you are getting the water spots from washing, it will be much easier to prevent them with your wash and rinse technique. Rinse the soap off the vehicle with a flow of water, using a device like this:

That will get most of the water to roll off the paint, leaving much less to wipe off with towels, etc. I divide my car into 3 sections: hood, doors + roof, and trunk. I wash rinse and dry each section at a time. Then I dry wheels off last. This practically eliminates water spotting for me.
