Do you guys use the clay bar or tar remover to reomve tar. I have been using surface prep but you have to do a lot of rubbing. It doesent take off any clearcoat unline laqure thinner(which I used to use when I thought I knew it all-LOL.) I can only imagine the damage from the thinner

Meguiars makes a Bug and Tar Remover, though I have been using a Gel from Blue Corral I think it is.

I would use that to get the bulk of it, and the clay only to get the little bits left behind.

I've used GooGone with success....I get the bulk of the tar off and then follow with the clay bar....

I almost always use clay, only going the solvent route if I have to. Done gently, the claying doesn't take off an appreciable amount of my LSP whereas any solvent that dissolves the tar *requires* me to reapply the LSP (and often any products I have under it as well).

I used a magic eraser from Mr. clean to remove a lot of tar and I mean a lot and it was removed very easy from the side doors of a red 1999 vw golf. I don't recommend this (in the package says that you can't use it on paint)but I did it on a car that I was doing a full detail anyway and it worked very good. Also the rims are clear coat and if you can use it on them I think that I was ok to try and I didn't want to waste a clay bar on that tar, It's like disposable clay bars jeje

I never had a problem with thinner but I thought it was very harmful to the finish. I know it worked great though. I have gallons of it.

I just soak up an old rag with thinner after washing and drying the car and rub off the tar and bugs. It will really haze the finish and dry out your hands so be careful. Polishing always put the color back after.

are clay bar disposable? should we use each bar once then throw and use a new one for the next detailing job?

                        Re: Clay bars and tar

I like using the Bug and tar remover. Just make sure you let the product dwell on the tar for a while.

Clay bars only last so long. When you knead them and you can not find a clean area to use. Then dispose of the bar.

                          Re: Clay bars and tar

I love the clay bar myself lol but it won't always work for the heavier applications like this. One of my customers last week came in to my store because they had driven over a white line on the road that had been freshly painted, thus leaving white splatter paints marks down the bottom side of their car. Unfortunately they left it for about a week and it was really hot weather. I prompted them towards the clay bar but it didnt get it off. At least a learned something new that day and discovered maybe i should have tried bug and tar etc. Unlucky i say...
