  • First detail on 2006 Mustang

    Hi Folks,

I'm new here with my first cool car. 2006 Mustang in Redfire Metallic! She's beautiful. I bought it two months ago and it is (obviously) still in great shape paint-wise..... except for a fine scratch on the hood caused by perhaps a lady in a parking lot passing by and dragging her purse across my hood. It's about 3 inches long and not deep. I can't feel it with my nail.

I want to pamper my beauty and make her even more beautiful. I ordered a bunch of Meguiars stuff and it came in the mail the other day.

After reading LOTS of posts and forums not only here but anywhere I could find, I have formulated this plan.

    Wash (Meguiar's Gold Class wash)

    Clay (Quick clay detailing kit)

Scratch X on the fine scratch on my hood

Paint clean (Meguiar's Deep Crystal paint cleaner)

    Polish (Deep Crystal poslish)

    Wax (Gold class liquid wax)

I would like to know if this is a good plan for a car that's basically brand new with no problems except for that scratch. Am I going overboard with stuff? Is this process only for older more damaged cars?

My husband thinks I'm totally insane for buying all this stuff and wanting to spend half a day doing what it takes to use these products.

Should I do it all, or just wash it and let that be that?

    Thanks for any help.

Welcome! Looks to me like you have really read up on the subject and your plan is a good one. Do this and your car will always look brand new! Your husband might think you are crazy now but after he sees the results, he'll probably want his rig done too! And if you REALLY want show car results, get a PC. My truck is a 1999 and it looks better than a new one!
    Black......the ONLY color!

      Congrats on your new Mustang!

No, I do not think you are totally insane!

IMHO though, if you wash your car frequently and it is brand new, I wouldn't think you need to use any heavy duty paint cleaning products yet!

But it's good that you have them all together just in case.

I haven't tried the Scratch X yet, but I'm sure someone else here can tell you about that product. From what I have read, that's the stuff you need.

      Good luck and welcome aboard.

Thanks for the responses. Perhaps I'll skip the paint cleaning step for another time when it more needs that. I'll post before and after pics when I"m done. I'm driving to Atlanta at the end of the weed and doing the cleaning/detaling there. It will pick up lots of dirt and grime on the way. :-)

To get the best results, it's all about prep. DC1 is very very very mild, so it's fine to use it on new cars. You never can tell whats really on your paint. You'll see when you clay the car, there's always something on it. Congrats on the new car and welcome to our Car Crazy world!
