  • quik clay/wax windshield.

I've just waxed my windshield. Looks and feels awesome. These are the steps I did:
    1. clean glass using a foaming glass cleaner - I used Stoner Invisible Glass.
    2. I used quik clay and quik detailer to remove contaminents ( the was a lot of them even after cleaning with glass cleaner, but clay did the job right.
    3. I applied a coat of Gold Class Clear Coat Car wax.

    Awesome results! !

    And it feels awesome too

    Interesting.

Meguiar's does not recommend applying an automotive wax to glass windshield just so that everyone is clear on this issue, (no pun intended).

This is for precautionary reasons as well as glass is a completely different animal compared to automotive paints.

I do a number of different things to clean glass, including claying, but for a protective coating I either use RainX or nothing at all.

I never did it for a protecting coat or to clean it, as I always clean the window first. not really sure how to say this so I'll put it in my lazy brains way of saying it and hope you can translate it. I just like the look of it. propably one of my old school tricks that rates high on the stuipid scale , but I haven't "seen" a problem with it yet.

I have done this in the past (wax windows) but I did not have a good experience.

one of those unexpected thunder storms down in Kentucky snuck up from behind us all was well in till we turned on the wipers and the window streaked so bad we had to wait out the storm and use what ever we had to get the window clear enough to drive again.

            not what I call "FUN"

it might be worth it on all windows except the windshield, would it actually protect againts spots being etched into the glass or it's just for looks?

                    Just to chime in here,

The problem with applying most automotive waxes to glass is that automotive waxes are formulated to work on and bond to paint, a totally different composition than glass. Paint is much softer than glass, and works much differently when chemicals are applied to it.

Glass is inert, very smooth and hard and most automotive waxes will not bond or adhere to the surface. The other problem with applying a wax to your glass is the one that Beercan31 described and that is the potential for smearing, clouding and hazing when it gets wet. This can potentially be very dangerous.

For safety's sake, when it comes to protecting, or coating your glass with a water repellent product, you should only apply products specifically formulated for glass by the manufacture, such as the RainX product.

I haven't ever used any glass wax. I have seen a few items like this around, but never purchased and used them.

I have heard of "window wax" but I have not tried it.

I have read the on the "autopia" and keep forgetting to try it

                          Before you detail you
                          car clean your windows
                          dry them
                          apply rainx (do not remove)
                          wash veh
this will take the remander of the rainx off leaving the windows protected like we want.

I for some "dumb" reason keep forgetting to wash the windows first apply rainx and then wash the whole veh. so I end up doing the windows last all the time.

                          Funny story
I was down in charlotte North Carolina with a friend and we were getting ready to leave and come back up north so I decided to stop and fill up the gas tank, take the time to reapply rainX all went well.
"pilot to copilot" all maps ready?
                          I hear "yep!"
off we go no sooner do we get on the highway the sky opens up on us.I mean this was the kind of rain you needed to slow way down for because the road was flooded. well the rain just ran off my windshield and you can see all around us everybody elses (?sp) wipers were on high and I did not need to turn mine on.
Well needless to say my copilot was so amused at my windows on how well the rain just flew off that we (I) missed my exit.
I Talk with a lot of people down in north Carolina, Virginia, Maryland on amateur radio so for the longest time all the exit names rang a bell (DUHA) I talked to people from those towns. In the back of my mind I'm thinking I should of by now had to change highways. all this time my it was still raining and copilot was SLEEPING!!!!!
the next thing he remembers is me screaming a whole bunch of words I will not use here.
He wakes up and all he can say is whaa.......I don't even get a "what" i get a whaa. I ask him what way should I go !!!!!
                          He says "where are we."
I said well that big sign over there says "express way ends 500 feet" Pennsylvania ave. not where I wanted to be..Down town Washington DC. during a orange alert.
All I have is "mapquest" directions from NJ to NC and He was going to read them back words to get the exchanges right!!!! wrong.I get very nervous when I'm lost and I can get lost on a one way road.

Well some how I got my self back on 95North Baltimore was a lot better than Washington DC. when I drop him off at his house he asked me will I need someone to read the maps next year?...I just couldn't help my self but laughed a long long time over that.

yeh yeh yeh I know it was long but I did rainX my windows...

Well at least I can laugh about it...now.

maybe windows don't really need to be waxed. I found one product - http://www.autogeek.net/diglclsy.html - I think it's a good glass cleaner/shield. I will defenetely try it... . Or has anybody tried it already? what is it like? Similar to Stoner?

                              Hey,

                              Just to add,

I would avoid putting any kind of wax on the front windshield. When it rains, windshields that have been waxed will smear badly and can cause the wipers to chatter as they slip-grip-slip. I remember when I was kid, my mom would take the family car through the --gulp--automatic car wash! She would also get the spray wax. Then when it rained, the windows smeared so badly that it was very hard to see.

My experience with Rain-X has not been much better. I have found that when it begins to wear away, the wipers will chatter.

So for me, I will stick with a good glass cleaner with a MF.
