  • "detailing guru" on m5 board

    http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=75987

    This guy really irks me.

There are gonna be some pissed off BMW owners when they burn through their paint.

Seriously, read it thoroughly, this guy hasn't a clue...
posted on autopia.. anyway to summarize, the guy professes to be some sort of detailing guru and apparently
    - washes with water only (?) lol
    - foam on a rotary will not burn paint, even 15 seconds at 1500rpm on the same spot

can one of the pros on this board (mike?) straighten out this guy before he damages someones car.. or worse.. lead other people down the same path, it looks like a lot of people on the m5 board are taking his advice and getting rotaries

ed: link to the autopia thread
Up til now, Ive generally bought the 'urban myth' that S100 is the same thing as P21S; just about half price. I just returned from BMW Techfest, where numerous tech seminars were held, not the least of which was a detailing seminar conducted by none other than Larry Reynolds of Car Care...

Oh deary me.... Mis-information is a terrible thing, I hope a whole heap of M5 owners don't all go out and buy high speed rotaries with no experience in their proper use... Reading rubbish like this on forums makes me mad! Someone will need to correct him, don't think a Vauxhall Astra owner will be very welcome on an M5 forum though!!

To say a PC wont remove any swirl marks is total rubbish - yes it takes longer, but I got severe swirls out of an Audi (Hard VAG paint) with one... And depending on which products used, but I have been doing a lot of practising with the rotary since I got it and have found the slow "splatter method" to be highly effective at defect removal, espeically with Menzerna polishes - no way 1400rpm, more around 1000rpm seemed to work great for me...

There are a lot of products on the market that work really well, a person with good skills should actually be able to take any system and make it perform to spec.

What's more important is finding something --> you like <-- and the results from your efforts look good in your eyes.

That is the blackest, wettest-looking paint I have ever seen.

note that some people that are really really good with a rotary car get away with only the rotary...but not me!!!
I think i have seen 2hotford(tim) apply wax with a rotary, and the pictures looked 100% swirl free. but i doubt that the guy on the M5 fourm is that good!

Reading that was like reading a Steven King novel....scary

But, he certainly believes in what he's doing so I'm in no position to tell him what he's doing isn't right....and if he's doing that to his $80,000 car, God bless him, he can afford another paint job...he certainly has an "arrogance" about him that comes across in his postings and I think that's probably causing more of the issue than anything...calling the PC "****" and statements like that don't do any good...Let's not forget that people look for others to guide them when they are not informed themselves and too lazy to get informed....Jim Jones got a bunch of people to drink KoolAid right ?....so if this guy has a group of other people with expensive cars that try this on their vehicles, all you can say is oh well....sometimes, you have to learn from your mistakes...

I as others have "learned" SOOOO much from this board in terms of not only WHAT products to use, but WHY and WHEN...understanding more about automotive paint and how it gets scratched and how to get those scratches out is so important...

I'll never convert from Megs.....ever.....I don't care if they have a miracle product...I like the look of Megs on my vehicles and really, that's all that should matter to anyone.

To me a product is only as good as the person using it and the after sales support you get. That was my biggest decison to use Meg's stuff for my detailing business.....now all I have to do is learn how to use a machine to lower the time spend per job and all should be great.

My motorcycle takes me 4 hrs of fun to bring it back to spankling every weekend but my wifes car takes me at least 7hrs to do the same job...and thats just the outside. Glad I'm only detailing motorcycles for a living.

I think this is what is called viral marketing

And someone's sig (on this board, I think) said it all: Arguing on the internet is like running in the Special Olympics..."

Hmm the more I read about this guy, the more it upsets me.

Using water only to wash a car will only do two things, glide over the film of dirt on the car, and not provide the proper lubricty for the dirt and grime to exit the cars surface without scratching it!

I've used all the products he's describing, and they are not all hes saying. I like his comment about, "Take it to a body shop or dealership to have them do a professional job"

Looks like he has some good points. I didn't see anyone proving him wrong yet plus he is doing it with good intentions so. if there is something really wrong with what he is saying then someone should come out and say it before other enthusiasts start applying his methods.

From what I gather from this guy on the M5 board he is a strong believer in his ways and nobody is going change that. Even if someone could come up with strong proof that his techniques are wrong, he will still believe them. I see some M5 members stepped up and said they disagreed with his "all water, no soap" method. If people really want to learn how to car detailing right, they will search the internet for the help and find MOL. I'm sure alot of the M5 members are smart enough no to try that "technique" on their beautiful BMW. Even a novice detailer should have doubts about this guy. I'm sure they learned how to wash cars way before they ever met the "all water, no soap" guy.
