  • Cleaned floor mats...musty smell???

I recently cleaned my floor mats using Meguiar's Heavy Duty Carpet & Interior Cleaner which I had used in the past with great results. This time it was a little different. There were some salt stains from the winter that it did not remove which forced me to use my pressure washer. Some parts of the floor mats actually smell kind of musty which is most likely the odour from the salt. This product really impressed me the first time I used it, I just don't understand how the results can vary so much.

    Thanks for reading.

Are they saturated? And if you used a pressure washer you should've used a wet/dry vac to remove any excess water from the carpets and followed up with a towel dry.

Sorry I forgot to mention that I used my Shop Vac to **** out the excess water and then I let them air dry. I am thinking that the Heavy Duty Carpet & Interior Cleaner is more suited for cleaning individual stains rather than shampooing the floor mats completely.

I've used the same stuff in the past (to clean spots on the carpet and the floormats completely) and all I did was vacuum the floor mats, then use the Heavy Duty Carpet & Interior Cleaner, agitate with interior brush, wipe off what I could with terry cloth, then vacuum the rest. Another thing is I used quite a bit of the bottle too there wasn't much left after I was done with the floormats and after spot treating the rest of the interior carpet, so I don't think it could've been from too much product. I never used a pressure washer though. I had great results, I thought is was a very easy to use product, well suited for the consumer line. But....to get back on topic...did you make sure that the floor mats were completely dry before putting them back in your car? I don't recall the Heavy Duty Carpet & Interior Cleaner to ever leave any scent or residue after the floormats had dried. Maybe the musty smell is the water still present in the floormats and they weren't completely dry. So if you were to put them back into the car and no windows or doors open to vent....the musty smell would occur. But if not and the floormats were completely dry and they just smell....then maybe it is the salt.

I have not put them back in the car yet since I wanted to make sure that they were completely dry. I am thinking of getting myself some APC and a brush for my PC 7424 so that I can really scrub the floormats well. I live in Canada and we have very bad winters so I am sure that the odour is just the salt that hasn't cleaned out too well. I will give the APC a shot and see what happens.
