  • Experimentation discouraged by price!

    Good Morning Everyone,

I've been reading thread after thread, picking up all sorts of tips/tricks and advice. Unfortunately there's just so much... and equally too many products to try.

The problem I've had is in Canada - access to the Meguiars line is limited in my area. Canadian Tire has access to the more "popular" products but the prices are terrible. Wal-Mart tends to be a dollar or two cheaper but they only carry older products (Wal-Mart doesn't even have the NXT line yet).

    Typical prices...
    NXT Wax/Paste...$29
    Gold Class Wax... $19
    Scratch-X....$15
    Clay Bar...$25
    Regular shampoo (not NXT) $15

These are just a few examples...
I went to an automotive shop to see if I could order some of the numbered products, like #80, #41... Etc. I nearly fell over when I saw the prices. Auto shop prices are instantly $15 more than the superstores. To complicate matters more in Ontario we have to pay an additional %15 tax on top of those prices.

I realize these are American products, but the exchange rate isn't even close to being nearly double the price of the USA version.
Out of all fairness... Turtle wax, Mothers, Amour All and EagleOne are mostly below $15 for similar products.

Yes you'd say, Meguiars is better...but not at those prices. Does anyone know a better way to buy product? Anyone had any luck getting stuff shipped from the USA?

At this point it’s almost worth a drive to the border to visit a local Wal-Mart in the states. Nearest border crossing = 310 miles away.

Anyone else agree price is a consideration - even when you consider the look of your car to be priceless???

yes the prices are no fun! sometimes NAPA is cheaper but for the most part ordering online or going to the US is the only way to get good prices on Meg's stuff.

NAPA also be able to order in the products that you are looking at, but its not always cheap!...all this coming from a guy that starts working at Canadian Tire starting today

exactly where in ontario are you?

hehehe Alberta now only pays 6% GST

Are you seriously saying you'd drive a 620 mile round trip to buy at Wal-Mart is the US, instead of paying the prices for Meg's where you live??!!?

Gas must be super cheap in Canada right now.

Why not just order online? If the website doesn't ship to Canada, you could try ebay or something....

wow, those prices are pretty high, practically double what you'd pay here. But sure the other brands are cheaper, although they may be a waste of money though. You know if you buy a Meguiar's product you'll get good results.
Advice: ebay, find other online retailer's that'll ship internationally, buy a plane ticket and take a vacation to California......attend a Meguiar's clinic.....and stock up on product before you go back.

Shipping from the U.S will cost you big in terms of shipping.. so if you buy, buy a lot :P lol

If you want to buy domestically, there are a few online retailers.. just google search. The prices obviously aren't as cheap as getting it from the US, but you do save quite a bit on shipping.

Where exactly in Canada are you?

Sorry if this sounds like a rant, and I may be hijacking this thread a little, but, since being converted a few years ago, I've been a fellow 'frustrated yet dedicated' non-US Megs user and I have to agree. Those Dutch prices are outrageous! This is stuff to make your car pretty for heavens sake, not prescription meds (which, BTW are easier to obtain on-line and CHEAPER! )

Meg's products in Canada are hard to find in the first place and way overpriced compared to the competion when you do find some. Having said that, I still go out of my way to find and buy them, but it certainly hurts a little every time I do!

Here in the Greater Vancouver area, we have a choice of maybe three auto chains that carry any kind of Meg's stuff at all and none have much of a selection. I paid over $40 for a 32oz bottle of DACP at Lordco 'cause I couldn't find anyone else that carried it all. I'd love to get some Hyper Dressing for the engine compartment, but... no Detailer Line in Canada - at least not yet.

With the advent of Car Crazy being shown in markets all over the world, one would think there might be an increased international demand. The Megs.com site sells on-line but doesn't ship internationally. There's a separate Canadian site, but there's no way to buy from them on-line. What's up with that, Meguiars? Anything in the 'on-line works' for Canadian and other non-US Megophiles ?

I think you can buy things from the Megs. Canada website, it just might cost you an arm and a leg!

BTW:the NXT will cost you more than it will in the netherlands from megs canada.

                    1. i agree with CDN88, the megs canada prices are absolutely ridiculous given how low the exchange rate has dropped. the prices would make sense with the old x1.5-1.6 exchange rates, but its dropped to around 1.1 and prices havent budged! same goes for all the other american companies that are milking the low exchange rate instead of translating the lower costs into savings for us
                    2. d-line please!
                    3. community events like megs usa does?
                    4. what happened to all the catologues i ordered off the megs canada website?
                    5. can megs usa please ship to canada? the lack of availability of product here is tremendously annoying. we're really not that far away!

Actually Canada is to blame..not the USA

TO answer a higher thread – it would be worth it to travel that distance - I'd combine it with my holidays ---- Niagara Falls hmmmm??? Otherwise a trip by itself isn’t.

Anyways - the problem with the exchange rate is greed - yes we all understand that. But the real problem is the border. Canadian Customs only allows so much outside product in. This is why you never see the same selection in Wal-Mart Canadian stores as you do in the USA version. Any Canadian knows that when you walk into an American supermarket, superstore or retail chain south of the border – the selection is unreal!

Canadian Trade officials limit and restrict product. Leaving manufactures that operate on both sides of the border to pick and choose which products get sent north.

Toss in the fact that we also have to pay duty and tax on anything higher than $20 (major rip off). Whenever possible I try to order things without the packaging and have them listed as gift from the USA. Sometimes I pay tax…sometimes I don’t. It’s a gamble.

Ordering from online dealers is more difficult because they are legitimate businesses and being dishonest on the customs form will only cause them problems and or us.

So yeah – the exchange rate issue is almost a non-existent - yet the prices stay high - that’s Canadian Tire and Wal-Mart Canada way of hauling in extra profit. Why doesn't online shipping become a better route? Cause Canadian customs makes it difficult when the product reaches the border.

So as much as I sit here and complain - the problem resides on my side of the border. Namly greed. grrrrr.

I'm sure given the opportunity to push more product north at a reasonable price - Meguiars would jump on that immediately. Which American manufacture wouldn’t!

As a Brit waiting for his immigration papers for Canada those prices look ok to me as we pay more than either of you (if you convert from £ to $ that is) but when im thinking in $ and not £ then they are gonna seem pretty expensive!!

Why cant you buy from somewhere on ebay like this?

fuzzydd: you can not order the catologues from the website!

" yet the prices stay high" its because we don't have the volume, if every Canadian agreed to buy 10 Meguiars product we would get better prices but the fact is people don't want to buy meguiar's because it is more expensive than anything else sold in Canada. its a vicious cycle

You can't order from Meguiar's Canada's website anymore. They no longer even list prices.

There is a note about a new website coming in August though, so hopefully the ability to order online will be back.
