Any hope for oxidized red MR2? (pics)

  • Any hope for oxidized red MR2? (pics)

    greetings,

    I just bought this 1992 Toyota MR2. as you can see the front looks OK but the roof and rear are pretty bad.
    are they restorable? this will be the first car i've detailed so looking for any suggestions on products to use.
    from searching on here so far I was planning on doing: wash, clay, #83, #80, NXT.
    thanks for any tips.

    How will you be applying the products? By G-100, other machine, by hand, etc? I am guessing it is clear-coated?

    That roof looks rough, but it doesnt quite look like clearcoat failure, though it is a zoomed out pic. It could be failing, but you will have to work on it to see. There might be hope.

      Hi YZF welcome to MOL

      friend of mine had the exact same thing with his MK1 MR2. I managed to correct the problem using Color X by hand (prior to buying my G100) so it can be done, but is hard work. That Toyota Red is really prone to this bleaching type of problem. Once corrected get a few coats of NXT on there and it should help to protect your results.

      PS great car i've had 3 a '89 Mk1 (AW11) and two Mk2 (SW20) '94 and '99, watch the rear in the wet though!

        Congratulations my friend, you bought yourself the world's most PITA coloured car. And trust me when I say this because I owned 2 red MR2s (turbo & NA) in the past. Go to the beach with for a day and you'll come home with a pink car, it is that bad. I don't know what kind of paint Toyota used with the MR2 but i think it is somethink with high zinc content and no clear coat etc. so it's really vulnerable to sun. However you MR2 is way more oxidised then any of my mr2s ever were so I don't know my advice will help much. In your case i think it really depends on how much the oxidisation has eaten into the paint and how much paint is left under the oxidised sections.

        Oh and your mr2 looks like a 91 model not 92. The wheels and the front lip are the giveaways.

        When I had my cars there was no NXT tech stuff so I used the regular ones. The products i used were:
        - Meguiars shampoo
        - Meguiars swirl remover
        - Meguiars deep crystal polish
        - Meguiars wet-look
        - Meguiars Gold Class wax
        - Meguiars Quick detailer

        Not all in once but i used them depending on the situation and each time i applied these products the red would come back. Here are some pics of the results:

          I'll be buying either a PC or a G100 (leaning towards the G100 for the warrantee) as it looks like it's going to be a big project

            Congrats on the car!

            I'd guess the paint is a single stage red, and while it's true that it's prone to oxidisation, this can be said of most single stage red paints, especially if the paint is left unprotected. On the other hand it can be one of the most rewarding subjects for polishing. The transformation is often amazing Be sure to take some pics during the process, it could very well be a candidate for the "Extreme makeover" forum

            You might first wanna try working by hand, this will also give you a "feel" for the paint. You could try DC1, ColorX, or the Cleaner Wax. If you're planning on detailing the car in the future, the PC/G100 will save you a lot of time (and hard work!), and will enable you to take your results up a level.

              I battle this issue. I own a 91 MR2 in Crimson Red. My routine is to use #80, #7 and NXT (X2) and that lasts for about two months. More if I keep it out of the elements. When freshly detailed you can't tell that the car is 11 years old.

              You should be able to maintain the finish for as long as the paint thickness holds out.

              The MR2 is an awesome car. I bought mine new in the fall of 1990. Can't bear to part with it.
