  • Cleaning rims ?

    I need your help.

I purchased my "chrome" rims from the dealer of my car. They're factory rims that were sent to 1-800-Usedrim for "chroming" and returned back to the dealer for selling. Problem is, I'm not sure if they were dipped in chrome, making them actual chrome rims, or if they were painted chrome with a clear coat? Can anybody help with more knowledge on this subject than I? Any guesses on what type of rim it is?

I'm of course trying to figure out the best way to clean them. I swear by Meguiar's, but by using Hot Rims Cool Cleaner, a toothbrush, and alot of elbow grease barely touched these small raised discolorations on them (brake/road grease?). I'm trying to find a safe wheel cleaner to use on them. Will Meguiar's NXT wheel polish be okay on these? Last year, I used Eagle One Mag and Aluminum polish on one small spot on one rim last year. Now that area has discolored and is slightly copper/bronze in color. Please help....

You sent the rims for chroming a couple years ago, and the discoloration is on the current 'chrome' wheels?

It sounds like the chrome was rubbed through, revealing the copper? I think it is underneath.

If it is that easy to rub through, I dont know if I would recomend any 'rubbing' sort of products.

The best thing might just be to clay them, and then stick with a mild chemical cleaner, like the Hot Rims, or Multi-Piece Cleaner.
