  • reapearng bloom/cloudyness??

im posting on behalf of a online friend from a car club im in

he has a single stage black vw that has been re painted in the past, he asked if i could suggest a way to remove some cloudyness /bloom thats in the paint

i suggested a cleaner wax and he reported back that it came up great but the cloudyness/blooming came back within a few days

is this how bloomed paint behaves? or would a aggresive cut possibly improve things ?

Oxidation is a battle with older paint. My 91 MR2 is single stage red and responds well to #80, #7, and NXT Tech Wax (x2). I think the oils in #7 replenish the paint and the look lasts for a couple months. NXT is a good sealer and seals the oils in the paint which slows down the oxidation. I believe NXT Tech wax, being a polymer sealant, is better at slowing oxidation than a carnauba wax.

Could the cloudiness just be a massive amount of swirling?

Might need a buffer or something to remove real deep swirls.

it seems to be white cloudy ness not swirls

is bloom a term used in USA? ive seen it before in the older days when a car is painted in damp or cold conditions

i cant see how come if polishes up nice but goes back to clody after a day or two

As jfelbab said, it sounds that blooming would be what we call oxidizing.

In more extreme cases, it is possible for paint to just become 'unstable' as Mike would call it, so it will look nice for a day, then go right back to looking how it did before.

Hmm.. well, perhaps others have experience with it happening right from the start.

                Steve

Had this very thing when my Single stage Black Toyota was re-sprayed. I was told by a colleagues husband who is in the trade that it was 'blooming' caused by spraying in damp conditions and is in the laquer not the paint.

Took the car back to the body shop who were going to get the Insurance company back to inspect before re-spraying (but i sold the car first).

It was a cloudy/milky effect more visible in sunlight i dont think any amount of buffing will remove it (i tried with PC) sorry to say it may need to be re-done.
