  • For those MONTHLY waxers out there..

I had never heard of people waxing their vehicles more than twice a year (much less monthly!) until I bought my first brand new car last month, started purchasing Meguiar's products and visiting this site..... I was living in the dark ages....lolol

So my question is this: Does there ever come a time when (eventually, after all that monthly waxing of at least two coats each time) you have some sort of "wax build-up" and just don't get the same kind of results that you first did? Do you ever need to use a paint cleaner and try to remove all previous coats of wax and start from scratch, so to speak?

I mostly ask because.....I am beginning to enjoy detailing so much that I'm thinking of turning into one of those 4-6 week waxers (spring/summer/fall, at least....I don't have a garage and do my detailing under the carport). PS.....my first and only wax job on this car was one coat of NXT paste about mid May. Now I have ColorX and GC that I'd like to try...maybe play around with different combinations between the three....

Wax breaks down after time but how long depends on many factors such as if the vehicle is kept outside or in a garage, how much is it washed, etc. As far as using paint cleaners, yes eventually you will need to use cleaners on your new vehicle. Follow the 5 step method for taking care of the vehicles paint.

By the way how is the hood looking ?

Wax wears off, which is the whole idea of it. So if yo uput 2 coats on, they wont be there forever.

Even on a brand new car, clay bars and paint cleaners are just as usefull. I guess some people might say they want to let the dirt build up before removing it, but that doesnt make much sense to me. I'd rather get it clean from the begining, and then never let more than a little bit build up inbetween details.

And ColorX will be able to remove any previous layers of wax, so if you clay and use ColorX, you will be pretty much completly clean each time.

Hehe....silly me.......I failed to remember that most things, including wax, don't normally last forever!

Thanks for asking about the hood! Tried paint cleaner + my hair dryer last friday with zero success. Went to dealership same day....told me to come back today. Their plan was to first try heat gun, then try buffer. The heat gun did the trick!! Whew!!

I restored an old 65 Mustang with a single stage finish back in February.

After the restore, it was parked in a garage for around 2 months, then it sat outside for 3 months. It hadn't been waxed, much less even washed since that time. I saw it yesterday and all of the existing wax was gone. I rinsed the paint down with water and all the fine beading was gone, and the water stuck to the paint like it hadn't been waxed in years.

This picture is from original restore but water looked like right side after 5 months.

Maybe this is a characteristic of a paint that doesn't have a clear coat. The owner didn't want me to spend much time on it since he was selling it in the next few weeks. I would have run #80 on it, then resealed it with M21, but instead we just ran NXT Tech Wax with a PC as a single step. All the gloss was restored and it was protected again, atleast for a few more months.
