  • Friend Painting Car

    Hi,

I have a friend who is going to paint his own car.

He removed all of his paint with an electric sander. He is now going to paint his car with a roller.

I just can't wait to see the gloss and shine he achieves. My guess is that on a scale of 1 - 10, he will probably get a 0 or 1.

    What do you think?

Actually, I've seen paint jobs done with a roller and they look professional. At only 50 bucks worth of paint. I have a pic here somewhere...hold on...

    Found it...

The source where I found it was here :

Wow, I am serisouly considering this once I get my mothers '89 Brougham.... since that car is a flat grey, it would work well... but damn, I think I would start out with a fender or something and see how it goes.... still tho, this is pretty sweet.... The guy is 69chargeryeehaa a few posts...

But where it originally came from is here:

The guy explains how he did it as you scroll down.

It will look miserable, at least at first anyway.

If he manages to get good coverage and film depth he’ll be able to sand cut and buff like the guy with the Charger. That’s where the potential exists to get a good finish.

I think it'd just be better to use a spray gun. It's not that hard and the results are much better.

painting with a roller, then wet sanding would look great

Yeah, I've seen the results and it can look good.

The problem is that getting perfectly even coverage is difficult. Plus, there would be a lot of wetsanding involved to level the paint flat. I have no idea what grit you would have to start with!

              Re: Friend Painting Car

I have been wanting to do this for some time on my Miata after I read the original thread on the charger. Be sure to post some pictures if he decides to proceed.

                Re: Friend Painting Car

This process has been discussed quite a bit on various car forums and with the proper technique (man, that sounds kinda funny in this context!!) and plenty of wet sanding I've seen several cars come out looking pretty decent.

While I can see it being a money saver it also seems like a ton of work. I suppose there's satisfaction to be had in that though, huh? Not to mention the look on people's faces when you tell 'em you painted your car with a roller!!!

                  Re: Friend Painting Car

I'm sure it can be done. I had a friend in the 70's who painted his car by paint brush. Yes paint brush. Another friend of ours father came by about a weekor 2 later used a rotary and wetsanding gave it a flawless finish. All he charged my friend was a case of beer. Back then it was about 6.00 dollars.
