  • Question Regarding ColorX

I am thinking about getting Colorx, but I am not sure about when to put it on. I think it is after clay and before wax so my process will look like this:

    1- Wash
    2- Clay
    3- ColorX
    4- Wax
    5- Speed Detailer (when neccessary)

Is that right? I will be applying all of the products by hand.

Also, after what step do I apply ScratchX and Bug/Tar Remover?

    Thanks alot

Yep, your process is right. Your ScratchX and Bug and Tar should be put on before Color X if you are going to use them.

I like to put the Bug and Tar on before washing, let it sit, then just wash the car as usual.

I like to top the ColorX with #21, but any wax will work fine, no worries there.

I thought ColorX was a wax itself? I want to make sure I understand---you use it, and then you put a different wax on top of it? I am not trying to sound rude---but WHY? I'm new to all this car detailing and just trying to find answers and ideas about which products to use on my own (first brand new) car.

Yes, ColorX is a cleaner wax.

The quetion you are asking deals with the fact that Meguiars recomends two coats of wax for even coverage and looks.

Also, single-step products, like a pure wax, or pure polish, are usualy going to be better than all-in-one type products, like a cleaner/wax.

So, by topping with a pure wax like #21, you are accomplishing both of those things. You are putting on a second coat of wax for even coverage and looks. And, using a pure wax/sealant will tend to have a litle better looks and durability as well.

So, yes, ColorX would be fine on its own, topping it just helps in those two areas..

            Hope that helps..

              Yes, that helps, thanks!

The only thing still (currently) confusing me is when many of you ole' pros start using these numbers.....like "#21". I sometimes try to find these products many people talk about and I never seem to find them on Meg's site when I only have a number to go by.

The only waxes I'm familiar with so far is the NXT Gen paste (have used once.....and I hate to admit that I didn't see any huge difference in my car's appearance), and the Gold Class (I was thinking of trying this next because I felt a little 'let down' by the NXT wax....was going to give the rest to a friend with a newer van), and now ColorX. Are those the 3 most popular waxes of Meguiar's? That NXT sure wasn't cheap.....it's getting a little pricey to keep trying new stuff, unfortunately.

Now I've been reading about polishes, too. Bought my car brand new on 5/5.....do you think Meg's DC Step 2 polish would make much of a difference? It's pretty tempting as it's not expensive.....but as I'm new at this my arm is getting tired out very quickly! LOL

What kind of car were you working on? Good shape, average?

It sounds like you didnt use any clay/paint cleaner/polish before waxing? You wont see a lot of benefit from Gold Class either, as both of these waxes are designed to be used on paint that has been prepped.

You can top the ColorX with Nxt Wax, or Gold Class, or #21 Synthetic Sealant. I used Nxt a first.

DC#2 is a pure polish. You would want to use DC#1 beforehand as well, to clean the paint.

Using ColorX would be a good way to prep the paint. Here is a link of it being used:

You would really want to follow one of these processes:

                  1. Wash
                  2. Clay if needed
                  3. Clean - DC#1
                  4. Polish - DC#2
                  5. Wax - Nxt, or Gold Class, etc

                  Or:

                  1. Wash
                  2. Clay if needed
                  3. Colorx
                  4. Wax - Nxt, Gold CLass, etc.

                    Quick question:

I want to do one layer of ColorX, and the one layer of GC paste wax. Do I need to wait any certain amount in between the products?? (I wasn't aware that NXT Gen wax had a "cure" time when I used it a month ago, so I am wondering if ColorX is similar?)

How long do I wait to remove ColorX?

ColorX is like any wax. Apply it to your car, then check back on it. It should be able to be swiped off easily by a MF cloth with very little pressure.

If you give it a swipe and it come off easily, that panel can be removed. If not, wait a little longer.

Murr, I know you are a big fan of ColorX and often times suggest it as a replacement for DC#1/DC#2. I thought ColorX is a Cleaner/Wax. So what about the "polish" phase of them cleaning process. Where does that come in when you use ColorX?

                              Ahh yes... a good question.

While these products are called cleaner/waxes, both ColorX and the A-12(Consumer) Cleaner/Wax would be more accurately called cleaner/polish/waxes.

All 3 steps are included in them, even if the name is a bit misleading.
