  • Rim cleaning, the age old question

I have alluminum rims. Is there any product that you can just spray on and it will take the brake dust off? My brakes give off a lot of dust, so the next day after i clean my rims they are already black again with brake dust.

Would a coat of wax help them to stay clean for longer?

Would using something like the mother power ball help to shine my rims?

One more question: is there any place to get your rims fixed from curb damage(it wasnt me, its a used car.) in or around dallas texas?

Yes but There are many types of "aluminum rims" Are they coated, polished, unpolished. Can you tell us more about the rims?? Then we can make sure and get the right wheel cleaner. You can also use product like Quik Detailer to quickly mist and wipe your wheels clean in between washes. So there are cleaners while washing, and there are ways of keeping them clean in between washes.

Yes, but Keep in mind, if a wheel cleaner is used during the wash process, the wheel cleaner will remove any type of wax protection because wheel cleaners are usually on the acidic side of the ph scale. Some worse than others. So you would have to re-wax every time you washed your car.

Depends on the type of aluminum and the coating or lack of coating...

There are plenty of the places around, you may check with a local dealer and see who they use. it is a pretty common practice for dealers to use these types of companies on their used car side of the business.

      The real answer

what you really need to do is to get someone to help you put new low dusting pads on your car. I've had to do it a number of times. I like Hawk brand pads and there is still a little dust but it is a light color and they work fine.

I've switched to Hawk pads too as my OEM pads were terrible for dust. Here's what I do though:

        1. clean the wheels thoroughly using the appropriate cleaner. polish if needed with NXT Generation™ All Metal Polysh or the Mother's Power Ball. Actually, combine the two for a great shine and ease of buffing!

        2. dry completely

        3. apply two coats of either M20, M21 or NXT Generation™ Tech Wax or similar

        4. between washes spray cool wheels with QD of choice and wipe with a wheel dedicated microfiber towel. I love Last Touch Foam Detailer from the Detailer line for this. It's just awesome and, along with the coat of sealant, takes the brake dust right off.

        5. when it's time to fully wash the car use the appropriate wheel cleaner and repeat steps 2 & 3.

I do this on painted wheels with a polished lip on two different cars. Never an issue with scratching and the wheels look great. I dedicated some older MT towels to wheel duty and I spray them with APC before throwing them in the wash. They come out looking great!
