  • Clay Streaking

I was claying the side of a car several weeks ago and the clay seemed to be melting (for lack of a better term) and streaking on the side of the car. Was I using too much M34 causing the clay to break down, or could i have possibly got into some of the body solvent that i had dwelling on the bottom half of here car? I was just wondering what caused the clay to seem to break down and start streaking on the car?

Hmmm, that is odd. Which clay were you using? The aggressive (red) Meg's clay may cause marring, but the mild (blue) clay and the consumer (white) clay should not. Using too much of a QD with clay shouldn't cause any issue, either.

I'm thinking that maybe the clay was bad? Potentially clay could go bad over a few years. Though, if properly stored, I've had clay last many years.

That is typically a sign of not enough lube or spray to kep from sticking to the finish.

I think it's impossible to use too much #34 while claying. Clay would work fine at the bottom of a swimming pool filled with #34. Smearing can easily occur with too little lube.

If the clay was dissolving and not just smearing you're probably right about getting some Body Solvent on it. I haven't tried claying after Body Solvent but I have clayed after using Bug and Tar Remover and the very small residual B&TR did start to dissolve the clay.

I was using the blue mild clay.

Maybe it was the Body solvent. I did not wipe the Body Solvent off. I had it on the bottom half of the car dwelling to break down some tar and other road grime. I may have just went too low while claying, and accidentally got into some of the Body solvent which started to break down the clay. The clay would actually stick and then there would be streaks of clay residue on the car where it started sticking, and the clay started gettng soft.
