  • Bosch PEX 420 AE

    Hello all

I have to sand down the door sills and doors here in my app. this summer so I bought myself a sander, Bosch PEX 420 AE.

While reading the manual, I noticed that I might be able to use it with meguiars pads as well. Anyone can confirm that?

    input power: 420 Watt
    power output: 215 Watt
    no-load speed: 4500-13000 RPM
stroke rate at no load: 9000-26000 RPM
    speed dial: (1-6)
    eccentricity: 5.0 mm
    sanding plate dia.: 150 mm
    weight: 2,2 kg

It says in the manual that with electronic control, it can be used for polishing purposes. It however advices to use only step 1 and 2 for polishing to avoid excessive heating of the surface.

If it can be used with the meg. pads, should I go by their recommendations? Or is it the same as with the DAP and can I use the speeds Mike advices in his showcargarage movie?

    Thanks in advance.

The machine is perfectly fine. I use a similar Bosch and I think it is great. It has enough power, electronic speed control and sufficient pad throw.

I use almost always speed 6 when polishing/correcting. No heat problems at all. The manual states BS.

        Hi Tom,

The only drawback on this machine could be the diameter of the backing plate
It's, like you mentioned, 150 mm. and that's going to tear up your Meg's pads
Cause the diameter of the Velcro, on the back of the pad is to small
        I just love detailing

I had the same issue DetailManiac described.
You can however tape off the sides of the backing plate - so the edge isn't sharp anymore and use the Meguiars pads without destroying them.

The backing plate on the PEX400AE (not PEX420AE) is 125mm - I guess that should be good enough for 6.25" pads?

              That's indeed sufficient

I like the 150mm backing plate more though because it has a bigger pressure area on the polishing pad, work gets done faster with the 150mm pad compared to the 125mm pad I have - but yours should work fine!

Bought the PEX 400 AE today. Apart from extra sanding discs, I also got a foam pad (red hoop backing) and what seems to be a synthetic lambs wool pad. Are they at all usable? I have a few Megs pads coming my way pretty soon anyway

I have the same model which I bought instead of a PC because of the voltage issue. I think it works great, but I mainly use it for applying and removing waxes and one step products, since I also have a rotary for defect removal. I think you can use roughly the same speed settings as for the PC: 5 or 6 for polishing, and around 3 for applying waxes.

I haven't used the pads that comes with it, but 6,5" pads fits perfectly. The velcro is really grippy though, so be sure to grab the velcro and not just the foam when removing pads.
"Now Biff... make sure that we get two coats of wax this time..."
