  • Any good rubbing compounds?

I recently inherited my deceased father's car. It had several long scratches along each side. I removed one with ScratchX but it took hours, about six thousand passes, two blisters and a six pack. I'm now considering a rubbing compound. I've seen both paste and liquid at Advance. I figure a compound would be more abrasive than ScratchX and thusly more effective. I would think the same application procedure with a little less pressure/enthusiasm (ran out of that in a hurry) would produce comparable results with a shorter, less painful effort. Has anybody here any experience with rubbing compounds? Any good ones out there? TIA.

You need to be real careful w/ "rubbing compounds" or "polishing compounds". Most of the time they are more abrasive and you end up taking out the original scratch, but you also put in thousand of finer sctahces that are just as hard to remove. It is like one step forward and 3 steps backwards.

Another oprion is to locate a quality detailer who knows how to work a rotary very well, and have him do the repair, then you can come back and maintain the car at that high level.

Let me clarify 2 things in my previous post...

      1) That is "option" not oprion

      2) When we say rubbing or polishing compounds, we are referring to traditional "rocks in a bottle" style products.

Thanks, Mike. Maybe I'll just do the ScratchX over a few days. I hadn't really considered inducing more scratches.

Why not try ultimate compound instead of scratch x?

were you using ScratchX or ScratchX 2.0. There is a big difference in aggressiveness and cut between them.
If it's the original ScratchX it's a very mild polish and ScratchX 2.0 may make a big difference for you. Since you always want to try the least aggressive product first and you already tried ScratchX, than you may want to try ScratchX 2.0 next. If that doesn't to the trick for you (or what you used really was the newer ScratchX2.0) than go up to Ultimate Compound next
What am I, fly-paper for morons?

                Re: Any good rubbing compounds?

I would recommend grabbing some UC or maybe even ordering M105/M205 and DA if you have the funds/will to be a car perfectionist.

One quick ?. Can you feel the scratch with your fingernail? If so, it's probably not possible to be removed with ScrtchX or UC.
