  • Does your black paint look patchy after waxing with NXT?

    Hi there,

I've recently started waxing my metallic black Toyota Altis and I must say Meguiar's NXT wax provides a depth and shine that memerises me everytime I parked it under the sun.

I can actually see the little shiny metallic star-like particles jumping right out of the paint!

However, of late, after I waxed it, I noticed the paint surface always seem to look a bit patchy under less intense lighting, eg. when I park it in the garage. It seems like some portions have darker, oilier patches then the others.

Is this due to wrong technique? Or is it due to not properly prep-ing the surface, thus resulting in uneven tone? I've tried double coats, still having a bit of the same problem.

I always try to wipe off with as little pressure as possible. Is it simply a case of not wiping it thorough and hard enough? (I'm a scratch and swirl averse freak, you see.)

Can some expert kind soul put my heart to ease?

    Thanks a million!

    Cheers,
    Jet

I have a similar problem with my non-metallic black truck too.. After using NXT my truck turns a milk chocolate brown and then a few hours later turns back to a high gloss black. I have no idea why it does that, but I have been through at least 3 bottles of NXT and all bottles have done it. I dont know what to tell you, I have never had patches look different.

Yes, and this is the same problem I am having in this thread
Process was #80 via PCw8006, #07via hand, #21 via hand, #26 via hand. Everything was wiped with brand new MicroFibers. I noticed after the apply the 21, that when I wiped it off I could see dark streaks on the paint in the same circular motion as I applied it. I let the 21 set up for 30-35 minutes before wiping off. I used

"Surface comes out streaky and oily"I have noticed this with both NXT and 21.

I also have a like surface grease that I can not pick up off the surface, it just smears around. Arghhhhhhhhh!
Let's make all of the cars shiny!

        Hi TH0001.

Yeah, it does seem a bit like grease being smeared around. I'm always tempted to either, rub harder with micro fibre to even it out, or using using my little index finger to do the same job!

Maybe its due to weather like what you guys said, I don't know. Over here in Singapore, it's extreme hot and humid all the time, a thorough wash and waxing job will have one break out in total perspiration just like a few hours workout in the gym! It's that intense!

With such sacrifice, you'll only naturally want to have the best result at the end of the day.....

Question is, should I just leave it alone? Or should I give it a thorough rub-down?

I will take closer inspection over the next few days before I wash it, and see if the "thing" evaporates off on its own.

        Cheers,
        Jet

ive got streaks on mine before....especialy if theres other stuff under it

try putting it on extra thin, buff off as normal then another thin layer

you could also try a wipe down with speed detailer the next day after its all set up

I usually get streaks with any wax when its just too damn hot outside...no matter how careful I try to be and I always detail my car in the garage.

Put on less and let it dry longer.

What little bit left over (if any) will go away in a day or so.

You must not be putting it on thick enough?

NO, I am just kidding around here.

If you get patches, it means there is something slightly different about your paint. Try some scratchX or a paint cleaner in the area inside and around the patch then re-wax that area.

                Shake NXT well.

It is an even product. I can tell you from experience all NXT in the entire container is perfectly uniform. For that reason, if there is a problem it is your paint not the wax.

It sounds like you're putting it on too thick. Try putting it on such that it almost doesn't even need buffing off later . . . .

Thanks guys for all your opinions and advices!

I may have applied too thick coat of NXT on the paint. Some people are saying a nickel's size last the entire hood.....hmmm, I must have used 10 - 20 nickels! ha ha....

Well, most probably thats the reason, if not, it could be the weather, its extremely hot and humid these couple of days in Singapore!

Will use a thin coat next time and see the end result....

A quick way to sort the problem out is to either use Quick Detailer or the Nxt spray wax.

I just used some spray wax now. Sprayed it onto a MF towel, wiped, turned over and wiped off :-)

                      Looks excellent!!!

EDIT:> I forgot to say that I waxed the hood with NXT first

Definitely no more than a quarter for the whole hood at the high end! I've noticed that almost any liquid-type wax product will be blotchy and difficult to clean if you use too much -- even a spray wax . . . .

That Nxt is so difficult to remove after you've used to much, though, is a testament to its staying power . . . .

                          Hi all,

Thought it would be useful to update you guys....

It has been a couple of days since I started the thread and my car was also out for a couple of days in hot sun and rain.

The dark, slight brown black patches were gone, but guess what, I was shock to see what I thought look like many swirls on the bonnet when I park it today under 10am sun!

Then, I use my fingers and lightly run thru a small portion and realise these are caused by a thin layer of residue and dust reflecting from the clear coat. When I wipe it, the swirls are gone. Phew!

Is this what you call steaking?

I'm gonna wash it off with NXT wash when time permits.....

Lesson learnt: Always use a thin layer of wax!

                          Cheers,
                          Jet

I read through both threads on this subject and thought I'd weigh in.

When I first used NXT, everyone told me, "spread it thin....it goes a LONG way!". I took it with a grain of salt and waxed my car exactly the way I'd done it hundreds of times before I had been converted. But I noticed I was getting that same greasy, patchy, oily appearance on the car. I thought enough of it to use some QD on it with a MF to correct the problem.

The next few times I really paid particular attention the amount of wax I was laying down on the finish. Now I didn't get it exactly right the next few times but every subsequent application, my technique to applying the proper amount of wax improved. I think Joe hit it on the head when he mentioned it's the amount of wax being applied.

Now that I have the amount of wax I lay down just right, I rarely have to go over the finish once I buff out the NXT with a MF.

                            Hope this helps.

Mike had mentioned afew posts above about only using a quarter size amount to do the whole hood, is this possible? Im really wondering if Im using to much product. I usually use a half circle on the 9006 pad for half a hood is this to much? Thnx
