• rotary hop

I have done a search and haven't found anything on this subject. I was messing around with some products, one side I was applying DACP with my PC and the other side I was using a rotory. By the way DACP is a pretty good product. Anyway when I was using the rotory I kept getting rotory hop. Method of application: I primed the pad by spraying some clay lubricant and then putting an X pattern of product on the pad, started off slow and worked the product in. As I was working in the product the pad seemed like it was grabbing and started to hop. Now mind you I was running the rotary at 1200 rpm and the area that I was working on was clayed also I think I am either not working it in enough or I am working it too much. When using the rotary when do you know that enough is enough? Some people tell me that when you can barley see the product you should stop. I followed that rule and the pad kept hopping. I am not getting a smooth flow with the rotory that I should.

    Hi screamingtp,

    Welcome to Meguiar's Online!

    A couple of questions first,

What size foam pad are you using?
Whose foam pad are you using?
I believe it's the yellow cutting pad and it's the Meguiars pad on the 7inch backing plate. I bought some megs pads a few days ago.

      Thanks

        Hi Mo,

If the pad is yellow, and fits on a 7" backing plate then it's sounds like it's our W-8000 8" foam Polishing pad, not a cutting pad.

A couple of things about buffing with a rotary buffer. It takes arm strength, shoulder strength and upper back strength to tame the rotary buffer completely. I'm not saying this is your problem, but for everyone reading this thread, the rotary buffer is a lot more difficult to control and operate successfully, than a traditional orbital buffer or the popular Porter Cable Dual Action Polisher.

Have you watched Meguiar's how to video, "How to remove paint defects"

You can order from Meguiar's for only $9.99 or you can watch the video for free at BetterCarCarecom. Here's the link,

        How To Remove Paint Defects

Note: To watch this video online you will need,

RealPlayer for Window’s systems. For all other operation systems, visit Real.com This presentation will not play without the RealPlayer browser plug in or a DSL/cable broadband internet connection.

Watching this video will teach you proper technique for using a rotary buffer.

Also, there is a good thread here on www.ShowCarGarage.com posted by our Super Moderator 2hotford,

        Rotary Hop Hop!!

And here are few more good threads on the subject of the rotary buffer,

Discussion of surface heat and the rotary

two rotary Newbies and a Makita 9227CY

Plus a few other good threads in the Advanced Detailing forum in general.

Another recommendation I would strongly suggest if you are new to the rotary buffer, is to start out using the smaller 6" pads. These are dramatically easier to control and very useful for working on thin panels and tight areas.

        Meguiar's W-7006 foam cutting pad

        W-8006 foam polishing pad

        Meguiar's W-9006 foam finishing pad

You will also need the W64 Backing Plate to enable you to affix these smaller pads to your rotary buffer.

        I hope this helps...

            Hey!

I tried to access the links because I wanted to educate myself on this subject and all I get on every single link is "page cannot be displayed"

I know this thread is older but I 2hotford posted about this somewhere and ran a search so I found this and now I can't view the threads. I would really like to see that write up by 2hotford. Thanks,,,,,,AR

              Hi AR,

Show Car Garage should be up and running hopefully shortly. Until then, I will see if I kept a copy of the write-up on my computer. I will let you know!
