If you buy a cheap, soft bristled toothbrush and don't press too hard on it it won't scratch the paint. I've never tried an old one, but I bought a new one (93 cents at most stores) and used it on my car and my girlfriend's car. Her car is a black car, and everything shows up, but I didn't see any scratches. Maybe you got some scratches because it was old? I would also be sure to get the soft bristles because they are less likely to scratch.
