  • Help!! ****** coating problems on Black Denali

    Hi all,

I have a 2003 Black Yukon Denali. I made the mistake of having the dealership put on their "******" coating on the black paint. Well, needless to say, here we are 3 years later (only 12,000 miles) and there are many problems with this coating.

How to I remedy this?? There are scratches and swirls and it is noticabley not the mirror black that Iwant for this vehicle.

Please, if you could, tell me in detail how to remove this "******" coating and bring back that gorgeous black shine where I can see myself and others are jealous of !!!

Thanks so much and by the way, I have the DA polisher if this helps.....

    Have a wonderful holiday weekend.....Debra

Well....I must be the real dummy here!!! I guess that non-stick coating name I was trying to use must be trademarked and not usable.

I am sure you know the non-stick coating I am speaking of.....
      Thanks....

Yes, the "T" word is filtered here for some reason.

But on to the real problem here. I think what you're seeing is simply justification for why the rest of us tell people to not waste their money with these "dealer applied sealants" whether they be non-stick or not. The claims simply are not true and the product just won't hold up. You can use the very best products Meguiar's has to offer, applying them with the finest technique known to man, and if you do nothing more than wash the car for three years (especially using an automatic car wash), the finish will look much like yours does today.

So, how do you fix it? ScratchX by hand will probably get rid of the swirls, but it would be very time consuming and extremely tiring. You'll should poke around this forum and read up on polishing using the G100 (Porter Cable 7424) dual action polisher. Using this with the correct pad and polish you can accomplish great things, and the risk of damage to your paint is almost nil.

Lesson learned though....don't let a dealer talk you into a sealant of any kind every again.

Myself I have a 1984 Red Corvette. It was stolen and had been outside for 9 months. I looked up the information on Meguiars.
So far I have used the paint cleaner and the liquid polisher. I am amazed. I don't have the electric polisher but I can see myself in the paint and I haven't even waxed it yet! I tried other makers products and was not impressed. This is coming from a woman. It looks so much better, I'm going to get out there again in the morning and work on it some more. I wish I had pictures to show before and after.

I would imagine that claying your vehicile would remove the majority of the sealent. Afterwords, I would recommend Megs 80 with a 8006 pad on your PC. This should remove most swirls (if not enough, step up to Megs 83) and finish what the clay didnt get.

Someone correct me if I am wrong here...

Unless the sealant is harder than the clearcoat, you should be able to work the paint as you would on any other vehicle.

Here is the link to the Meguiar's 5 Step Paint Care cycle, there is a ton of useful info there to help you out.

              5 Step Paint Care Cycle

And here is another link about removing swirls with the G100 (PC).

Using the G100 to remove swirls

You may have already read those, if so sorry for the duplication.

You could test a small area by hand with Scratch X and see if you can remove some swirls and defects.....if so I would use the PC and try the whole program....

Just to chime in here... I really doubt there is any of the sealant left on your paint. The environment is working on removing the coating from day one. The info posted above should help you get going in the proper direction. Let us know what other questions you might have.

Thanks all.....and to answer a few questions:

Yes, I did learn my lesson and will NEVER have the dealership put anything on my vehicle.....I won't even let them wash my car!!! But the damage is done and now I need to get the finish back.

I do have Meguiars dual action polisher and really got it for the purpose of fixing this problem.

The vehicle is stored in the garage and is only driven about 5 months out of the year....the reason for the low mileage.

I just needed people with far more detailing experience to lead us in the right direction and give give us detailed instruction, along with the specific product that would give us back the mirror black that is soooo impressive.

I forgot in my first post that anyone who would prefer to email me privately could do so at: dnelson252@earthlink.net

Thanks so much and I look forward to reading all your advice....

IMHO, the most important step for show car finishes is paint cleaning (which is also why it's the most time consuming step). Paint cleaning adds back the clarity in the clear coat that has been lost due to the environment.
Since you have a DA, I would recommend #80 Speed Glaze after washing and claying the car. Depending on how hard your paint is, #80 will remove the swirls and scratches and also polish your paint. If #80 isn't strong enough (or is too strong that it leaves micromarring), there are many other options as well, but I would start with #80. Good luck!

You have some of the tools......just need the right product and some effort and you'll be all set....
