Cleaner vs Cleaner/Polish?? (when/why)

I've been doing my research, very much thanks to the search function on this forum, as well as Mike Phillips' very informative posts, as well as other useful forum members contributing to other posts.

That being said, I've been trying to find, and still cannot find, where it might be appropriate to use a cleaner/compund instead of a cleaner/polish.

In doing my research, I've seen descriptions of the M01, 02, and 04, and what pad to use, as well as M84. Then there's the cleaner/polishes, such as 80, 82, and 83. And then the pure polishes, such as 07 (but those are out of the question for the context of this issue)

Would a cleaner/polish perhaps be used instead of a cleaner, and then polish? Or, in case of heavy swirling issues, a cleaner first, and then a cleaner/polish, or just a pure polish?

Your question kind of brings together a few points, so it will probably end up being a jumbled answer, but let me try to break it down some.

How will you be applying the products you choose? By hand, PC, rotary, etc?

Single step products are almost always better then multi-step products for doing a job, because they focus on only one thing. However, pay attention to the 'almost'.

The #80/#82/#83/#9 products are cleaner/polishes, so they do combine steps, but they are very very good cleaners. And they contain enough polishing oils to keep you paint looking good. However, some people will view them more as just cleaners, and follow up with a pure polish after.

It also comes down to how you will be applying. Most of the products these days say they can be used by hand/PC/rotary, but I think they still tend to have ways that are best.

#1/2/4 would tend to be more for people working with a rotary.

So maybe the issue isnt so much when to use what, but what sort of tools you are working with.

Yeah, I see where you're going with that.

I actually ONLY have a rotary. Well, I have an orbital, but that's only good for applying and removing wax (sometimes).

I've got some #9 and DACP on order, I might pick up some #2 (hahaha) today as well.

do you think #7 would be okay to use with a rotary with 9006, on a lower speed?

I think there are some threads around somewhere recently with people using #80/#83 by rotary, if you havent seen them. Perhaps a little search could bring them up, if you needed any more advice with that.

As far as #7, I'd probably go with hand application on that one, or your orbital. I dont think it would go very well by rotary, though I am not a rotary expert. Someone else will need to answer most of your rotary questions.
