  • Removing a 'hotglued' emblem from paint surface?

    Ok,

2002 Ford Focus. Someone before the current owner, hotglued an emblem , the letter "S" on their trunk lid, next to the license plate. I can tell it is a glue as it squeezed out around the letter.

    The glue is a gold/dark gold/amber color.

Can I get suggestions on how to remove? I am thinking I don't want to pry it off, as there is clearcoat and paint underneath.

Is trying to turn it into a jelly or dissolve it the best attack? It is pretty flat against the paint surface but does have two edges where the glue didn't squeeze out..

Is dissolving it is the thought, recommend a solvent? Looks like hot glue to me, not sure.

I was thinking nail polish remover? (not sure about that), Goo-gone, heating it with a hair dryer, wd-40, etc?

The emblem (letter) is plastic with silver finish.

    thanks for any ideas..

I am not sure what temp hot glue melts. you would thing a hair dryer might heat it up enough to soften it.

Something like Gold Class Bug and Tar remover help eat away at the glue? Just thinking out loud.

I'd try the hairdryer/heatgun method. Avoid mineral spirits...

Almost any solvent (PrepSol, New Car Prep, etc)

Dwell for several minutes, give it a chance to work!

Try to slide/saw some dental floss top to bottom.

Use more solvent to remove the remaining adhesive. Flushand wash. Repeat. Protect the surface.

I do it three times a week, at least.

          G'luck!

If dental floss is not strong enough to saw behind the emblem, try fishing line.

I've been told fishing line works also.
