  • To clean/polish or not.

Just thought I would submit a question for some of you to kick back some feedback on.

I am working up a friend's Honda with him. He has a 4 month old custom paintjob with some swirl and Holograms.

Thus far we have ran #80 over it with the 8006 and the PC and we are in the middle of running #80 with the 9006 and the PC. I considered possibly switching over to the Rotary because after the 2 passes of #80 & the PC we are not going to get all the swirl out. The Holograms are gone.

He is doing quite a bit of the work himself. We are working at my house, with my gear and I start each pass, give him basic instruction and when he has a grasp of it I let him take the PC and work it with me watching.

Now here is my dilemma. He is buying his own PC and he is quite the car lover and I honestly think he is getting hooked on what I have taught him thus far. We could probably take his finish just about all the way to perfection with the Rotary. "BUT" as he is buying his own PC, pads products etc. I am wondering whether or not we should stop short of perfection as I suspect he will end up doing alot of future polishing when his gear arrives. In other words, I don't want to overpolish this paint more than need be now considering he "may" do alot of cleaning/polishing in the future.

Anybody want to offer up any feeedback here?

Well, if you are going to do a rotary, better you than him if you are familiar with it.

Certainly he could then tidy up the little swirl or two left from the rotary.

The Rotary is kind of up in the air at the moment. I was kind of figuring the #80 would do the trick but not the case. I still want to have a go at it with the PC/8006 and #82 first though and see what it looks like. I suspect it will be very close. He is already very happy with the results.

I have explained to him that I really did not wish to go with #83 or go to the Rotary unless absolutely necessary. We are going to have him close with the PC and with his buying his own, I don't wish to over do it at this point.

On his paint job, the shop left him a good bit of holograming. That was his main concern, the swirl isn't bad and to be honest, I would have sworn the #80 would have taken it out. To odd part is that he says he has barely touched it since the re-paint. But it has alot of swirl. I have not been at this along time but am curious if it is not so much swirl that I am looking at but could be a combination of swirl and sanding marks.

Why don't you tape off a section with 83? Why do less thatn what you are capable of, maybe stopping short of the rotary if you don't want to get stuck doing the work yourself. And PICS, Jeff, PICS.

By "stopping short of the rotary", I meant doing 83 with the DA. That way, if it is working, you can turn it over to your buddy for the grunt work, while you sit in a lawn chair and supervise.
