Please don't believe them. This is one of the most common misunderstandings/miscommunications/misrepresentations perpetrated on car buyers. It's at best wildly inaccurate, at worst deliberate deception.

I'm not saying your dealer's employees are lying to you. They probably believe it themselves. Few (none that I've ever met) understand how paint and paint care products actually work.

The companies that sell the stuff make wild claims about how great it works but can't back it up with any data or even a scientifically feasible argument. They always fall back on some guarantee that if the product fails to protect your finish in some period of time they'll fix your paint.

What they don't tell you is that if you put nothing at all on your paint for that time it probably won't fail. Worse, it will be slowly degrading all along and sometime shortly after the guarantee expires so does your paint. Now you're left hanging with a trashed finish and nothing to do but pay for a re-spray.

Modern sealants do last longer than traditional waxes but they require regular maintenance and periodic reapplication. Companies like Meguiar's and their reputable competitors make the best, longest lasting ones. But they'll be the first to tell you that, as good as they are, they will wear off and need to be reapplied.
