  • Detailing your car

OKay here is just a quick stupid question.

you can do the same detailing job by HAND as you would with at PC/G100, you just wouldn't get the same result would you?

like you don't need the machine to do 5 step Detailing Process do you?

    thanks

    cheers

big thanks to Richard who has helped me so far in answering a vast majority of my questions

I've seen Mike Phillips demonstrate detailing by hand, and the results were great.

    I bought a G100!

You can certainly cover all 5 steps by hand or PC, or a combination.

The big thing with the PC is that it will be faster, remove swirls easier, and use less product.

        thanks for the responses all.

it helps alot. knowing that i can do the job by hand or PC. i know M21 can't be done with machine so i'll be prepared b/c that's how i use to wax me old truck.

and richards help thus far has been huge.

i've been doing some research on claying and hope to test it out.

        wash
        clay
        polish
        wax
        M21

        can't wait.

        cheers

i understand its only suppose to be about 15-20 pounds of pressure.

is there any way to buff off the paint or what not and ruin the finish with the PC/G100?

M21 is entirely meant for machine use. Just happens to work good by hand as well.

            Just to be sure:

Do you mean clean, then polish in your steps? Or did you mean cleaner/polish?

What do you mean by wax, then #21? 2 coats of #21 would be best, if you are going to have #21 on top anyway.

And no, if you push down too hard, the PC will bog down and stop spinning.

              yes,

              i mean

              wax
              clay
              paint polish
              then deep crystal polish
              wax
              the #21

Is it possible to grind all the way through your paint with a G100? Yes.

If you buy a few dozen 1 gallon jugs of Meg's most aggressive cleaner/polish (for a DA that's #83) and buff your trunk for eight hours a day, six days a week (ya got'ta take at least one day off), you will buff through your paint at some point. I guarantee it.

In the real world it doesn't happen. (Also, if a finish is already dead it's going to fall off the car whether you buff it or not.)

Well, if you rub your fingers in one spot long enough, it will wear through the paint eventualy. Maybe even faster than the G-100 would, since there is no producct for lubrication.

Actually, you can damage a car's finish faster than that with a G100. Drop it on the hood.

Seriously though, Paul's method and mine are about the only way to seriously mess up your paint with this machine. Well, that and using it as it was originally intended - a power sander!

Back to your original question though - what the G100 does for you is:
                      • makes swirl and defect removal faster
                      • makes wax/sealant application & removal faster
                      • let's you apply a uniform, thin coat of wax easier
                      • keeps your arms from falling off after a full day of detailing

                      Of the steps you outlined

                      wash
                      clay
                      paint polish
                      then deep crystal polish
                      wax
                      the #21

the only ones you can not do with the G100 are wash and clay.
