  • Protection against paint chips

    Hi,
The red metallic paint on my 2003 Subaru Forester chips and scratches very easily. I've never had a car whose paint seemed so "fragile," and my other car, a 2003 Honda that gets similar use does not have the same problem.I bought the Subaru when it was 11 months old and in great condition. It has never been repainted. I've been using Meguiar's Liquid Cleaner Wax, but would like to try something more protective. Is there a product or technique I can use to protect the paint, especially in vulnerable areas -- hood, door edges and around handles? Would a paste wax provide more resistance to chipping and scratching?

    Thanks
    EB

Sorry, but the choice of Last Step Product (LSP) won't have any effect on your paint's resistance to chipping. The sort of mechanical/ballistic damage that results in paint chips will be too much for any kind of wax or sealant to withstand.

The only solution to this is the "clear bra"/protective film approach, which really needs to be applied before any damage occurs.

FWIW, my Subarus always chipped easily too. I just remember what the museum curator said in a long-ago magazine article: "real cars have paint chips"; in other words, I just live with them until they get too bad and then I have the affected areas repainted.

I was told buy the Bug/Stone deflector.. Seems to have saved my hood, though still some chips on the bumper.
