  • Which pad for #7

I read and printed out a sheet that had the recommended pad and speed for certain products.
On this sheet, it says to use a 9006 with the #7 SCG.
But, I just saw a thread by Mike that said the 8006 is the recommended pad for polishes.
Is that ALL polishes or just certain ones?
    Mike...could you clarify please?

This is a pure polish, which needs to be applied by the 9006. A cleaner polish, one with diminishing abrasives, needs a polishing pad, which helps to better harness the polishing ability of the product. For example, use the 8006 with #'s 80 and 83.

This might sound a little contrarian, but I'll often use a polishing (8006) pad with pure polishes instead of a finishing (9006) pad but it depends on the paint's hardness.

[b]Assuming the paint is hard enough that the 8006 is functionally nonabrasive [b] I don't find any downside to the more open (polishing) pad and it doesn't load up as readily as the more closed (finishing) pad. On some vehicles I also prefer the less flexible nature of the 8006.

When the paint is so soft that the 8006 is *NOT* functionally nonabrasive, then yeah, you gotta use the 9006.

And note that certain mildly abrasive polishes sometimes do a particular job best when used with the 9006 (finishing) pad! There are general guidlines and then there are special circumstances.

Just gotta consider the functional ramifications when you work outside the box. Consider abrasiveness, flexibility, and product-loading.

Either pad is fine to use with pure polishes.

        Two comments,

        1) Which pad you choose is influenced by what you're trying to accomplish, a softer pad like the W-9006 finishing pad is our most gentle foam pad and would be best for applying light cleaner/polishes, pure polishes or polish/waxes or pure waxes because the goal when choosing this pap with any of the previously listed products would be to provide little to no cleaning ability.

The W-8006 polishing pad can be used with all of the above listed products plus it can also be used with more aggressive paint cleaners, cleaner/polishes and cleaner/waxes when you're looking for a little more cleaning action.

        2) Because the W-9006 finishing pad is very soft and offers a lot of cushion, it tends to be a little gushy after it becomes saturated with product and some people don't like the feel of this gushiness, (doesn't bother me), so when you're choosing a pad, you as an individual will over time develop your own personal preferences depending upon what you're trying to accomplish.

        Make sense?

Well, I guess I have another decision to make when I apply it for the first time.
