paint protection film is an excellent product! I personally dont like the invinca-shield kits though. they are in to many pieces and there are too many lines...almost defeats the point of it being clear with the puzzle of lines after its installed.
I personally install xpel kits with 3m film, looks great and stands the sest of time.
I have it on our mini, our 4runner and on the work truck for display.
If you need more info let me know. I am also an installer. If you dont play you CANT win!

Is this something you can install yourself, or do you need to take the car to a pro? I am pretty adept at these kinds of things but I don't want to take a chance of screwing it up. What kind of cost are we looking at?Anything worth doing is worth overdoing.

every kit and every car are different, I would recomend having it done by a pro. some people can pull it off but its not all that easy to do if you dont know the tricks and have some experience doing it. full kit installed is anywhere from $375 - $800 depending on car, dificulty and the installer. If you dont play you CANT win!

Chip and Scratch Protection:
By applying a clear 12Mil plastic (X-Pel™) to paint surfaces will protect the surface underneath from marring and is available in 3/8th, 2” and 4” widths. Use on the front end of the hood, doorsills, around the fender wells, inside doorjambs or the loading areas of SUVs.
To apply, clean the area with a mild solvent and let dry, cut the material to length required, spray the area with positioning spray supplied. Remove the #m adhesive backing, taking care not to touch the surface as it the oils from your fingers will leave a mark that will show through once the plastic has been applied. Use the supplied squeegee to smooth out the plastic and remove any air bubbles.(Groit’s PN 77890)
Do not use on plastic bumpers or re-painted vehicles.

Also the paint protection film is 6 - 8 mils not 12.
20 - 40 mil is used by xpel for headlights.
I believe the new 3m scotchgard is 5 mils, the old was 6, venturetape is 6 mils...and there are some out there that the thickness varies a bit so these #'s arent guaranteed 100% acurate. If you dont play you CANT win!
