  • Envoy paint very hard?

I had a '04 GMC Envoy dropped off to me last friday and it looked like someone washed it with sandpaper!!

I tried #83/8006 on the da and after 2 or 3 passes it basically did very little. So then I went to the rotary and same pad compound. Made a little bit of difference after 2 passes but still not much. Then switched to 7006/84 on rotary and it took out some of the lighter marks but left the deeper ones. Not having a wool pad I tried #85 with the 7006 and slowed the speed down to about 1200 and it took out the deeper marks. But then I had to go to #83/8006 and make 2 passes to take out the swirls!

Now the part that made no sense, I tried the da with #83/8006 and it showed more swirls but they were not tight swirls but well spaced out swirls if that makes sense. After 3 passes with the da, the swirls were less but there appeared to be what you guys refer to is micro marring. I have never had this problem before and it also did this with the 8006/#80. So then I went back to the rotary and there are no swirls.

This is all stuff that is very light and I can and have taken out of other cars with the da and #80/8006 except for a few spots that were lightly deeper. I was going to try #80 with the rotary but I ran out of pads!! I need to order some more I guess!

Is there a reason for this?
Is this the hard but scratch sensitive GM paint I keep hearing about?

I tried to take pics but the camera will not focus on what I can see. I'll try a few more times to see what I can come up with. I still have the passenger side and hood to do tomorrow so maybe the daylight will help with the pics.

Well, I am not familiar with that vehicle, but the next thing you should try is going milder.

You can try either a #9/#82 sort of product with the 8006 pad. Or #80 with a 9006 pad. Or even #9/#82 with the 9006 pad.

Just something to try and get milder.

      Hey,

Yes, recent GM paint seems to be very marring sensitive. Here is my advice. Take the rotary (~1300 RPM) and a W-9006 Finishing Pad with #82 Swirl Free Polish. I have a feeling that this will remove the final marring that you are getting. I know this seems a little backwards, but if you use this combo, it will "finish-out" the paint a little more than using it with the G100 or #80 with the G100. Follow the rotary and #82 with the PC and #82 with the same W-9006 Finishing Pad. Then take the G100 and follow up with another clean W-9006 Pad and #21.

      So;

      1. Rotary (1300 RPM) with W-9006 and #82
      2. G100 speed 5, W-9006 Finishing Pad and #82
      3. G100, speed 3, another W-9006 Pad and #21

Make sure you do the rotary step and the #82.

Give that a try and report back.

I guess I'll try the PBE store in the morning and see if they have any pads and #82. Maybe just the pads as I have #9 and I need a few more W9006 & W8006 pads.

Thanks I'll Give that a try!!
