Black car. After washing and artificial chamois, then air dry, I go over it with QD. As I move the cloth over the surface, black spots appear, then quickly disappear as the QD dries. Are these the beginnings of water spots?

Sounds like it....this is probably due to a breakdown in your topcoat of wax/sealant
Have you tried to reapply a wax, then check to see if this effect is gone when you QD?
EDIT: Hey, Tim, great suggestionSee the big picture, enjoy the details

Long story made short. New car. Dealer damage. Dealer repaint (so I had to wait to put wax on it). Body shop butchered it and dealer is giving me a new car. Should be here by the end of the month. Under the circumstances, I did not want to touch the finish beyond washing--also, I would need to wait for the paint to cure before waxing.
I have so many products, I hate to add another (ColorX). How about 80 by hand? Or 83 by hand? or ScratchX by hand. Doing a little spot like that would not hurt me with my dealer issue. I'll give it a try.

Is this your black Lexus SC that was repainted poorly?
That's truly a shame, but at least you're getting a new one after the hassles they've put you through with their mistakes.
Might as well learn and experiment with this one before it gets replaced.See the big picture, enjoy the details

Yes. And Lexus has really stepped up and done the right thing--with a "little" persuasion.
I'll try a little 80 in a limited area, but beyond that, I have dodged a bullet and don't want to take a chance--it is sort of their car right now.
