  • A pair of NXT topping questions

Hello, first post here I believe, although I've lurked for a while before registering. Let me start by saying I have just run through the whole gamut of prep/finishing steps for the first time ever and I am absolutely ecstatic with the results. I stripped all of the previously applied protectants off my black '06 Z using DC1 (I might end up trying an alternate for that step in the future, that residue is just rediculous, but it definately cleaned the paint) no clay bar cause I did this just a few months ago to get rid of all the shipping contaminents and being garage kept the paint was still good, followed with #7 (sweet, easy on/off polish, more depth would be great, but sweet nontheless), and topped with NXT. I would have rather gone with GC or #26 (#21 wasn't on the shelf at my supplier's store) but had to use NXT to fill my wonderful dealer prep swirls. NXT came through like a champ for me in that regard, as it always did on my '03 black Maxima.

Now that I've given a way too complete picture, on to the questions. I am going to top with #26 (2 coats) and I understand that NXT has a setup time of roughly 12 hours depending on the conditions. My first question is:

When does that set time start? When the wax is removed or when it is applied? I put the coat on late last night, well, OK, early this a.m. and didn't remove until I got some sleep. I'd love to top it today, but it is going to depend on when the polymers started to set.

Next question, OK, I lied next pair of questions:

NXT is great in that although the bottle says to keep it off trim work, if you do get it on there it comes off very easily by just buffing it off. Does #26 behave like this or should I keep it off of the trim?

Also I'm wondering about the 2nd coat of #26, should I allow set time for this or can I just follow the first coat right away with the second?

Thanks in advance for the help, and the patience in reading the novel I just wrote.

    1. Well, I always start counting hours from when I remove the wax. But, keep in mind it is just a rough time, so if you can only wait 11 hours, I wouldnt freak out. Yo uwant to try and wait about a half hour at least before topping, anything more even better.

    2. I definately try to keep all wax off trim. Either being extra carefull, or taping, or applying some trim dressing first. Yo ucan apply the dressing, then wax, then buff off excess dressing.

    3. It would be best if you can wait a few hours, but again, do what is best for you. Just try and wait at least a half hour.

Murr1525, thanks for the reply. Yeah, I figured it was probably from when you remove the residue, but thought I would try to save some wait time if I could. Great tip on the trim dressing, I'm going to have to run out and get some. I looked at taping off earlier and decided there was no way with some of the irregular pieces on this car so this will really help.
